West Bengal Emerges as India's New Industrial Powerhouse

West Bengal is on the cusp of a major industrial revolution, thanks to the recent announcement of five brownfield expansion projects by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) and Yantra India Limited (YIL). Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for these projects, marking a significant milestone in India's shipbuilding and defence manufacturing sector.

The expansion projects, which will be undertaken in collaboration with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, will enable GRSE to enhance its manufacturing capacity and infrastructure, thereby meeting the growing requirements of the Maritime Forces and other defence stakeholders. The company has signed lease agreements for two small shipyards and a 32-acre riverside property at Raichak, with an investment of over ₹2,500 crore.

The Raichak facility will be developed as a shipbuilding hub, featuring a 200-metre dry dock, slipway, launching pad, jetties, and block fabrication facilities. This will enable GRSE to construct warships up to 200 metres and commercial vessels up to 60,000 DWT. The 4-acre Timber Pond facility at Shalimar will be rejuvenated with nearly ₹100 crore for medium-sized shipbuilding and repairs, while the Damodar facility at Kidderpore Docks will receive around ₹70 crore for medium-sized vessel repairs and construction of electric ferries and other small crafts.

YIL's new facilities at Ishapore will strengthen indigenous metallurgical and defence manufacturing, reducing import dependence and supporting the defence, railway, and strategic sectors. The ₹277.59-crore 3,000-ton Heavy Duty Hydraulic Open Die Forging Press will replace the ageing 2,650-ton press, producing gun barrels, ammunition components, and heavy defence forgings. The ₹473.84-crore Radial Forging Plant will manufacture super alloy forgings, aerial bomb tubes, ordnance hardware, railway axles, and nuclear reactor components.

The Hon'ble Raksha Mantri, Shri Rajnath Singh, expressed his happiness over the expansion of industry in West Bengal, stating that the foundation of this confidence lies in the national security of our borders. He congratulated the Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal for taking Bengal forward with confidence. The Hon'ble Raksha Mantri also highlighted the extensive experience of GRSE in the construction of naval and commercial platforms, having delivered over 800 platforms.

He said that when India becomes a developed nation by 2047, West Bengal will also develop.
