Explore CNC Systems →Ground Test Vehicle Takes Centre Stage in India's Ghatak Programme
The Ghatak/RPSA programme, a cutting-edge project aimed at developing a futuristic, tailless flying-wing aircraft for the Indian Air Force, has reached a crucial milestone. Larsen & Toubro, the Development-cum-Production Partner (DCPP) for the programme, has begun work on a Ground Test Vehicle (GTV) that will play a pivotal role in validating the airframe structure of the aircraft.
The GTV is a critical component of the programme, designed to undergo rigorous testing and evaluation to ensure the structural integrity of the aircraft. To achieve this, the GTV will be equipped with high-precision hydraulic actuators and sensor arrays to simulate G-loads, as well as advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques such as ultrasonic and thermographic analysis for the composite structure.
The GTV will also be used to test the hydraulic actuators and sensor arrays, further derisking any potential delays in the programme. Moreover, the platform will be used for basic avionics validation, mission software testing, and stealth measurement at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) facility.
Nanoweave Composites — Precision Engineered Carbon Fiber
Empowering aerospace, UAV defense & robotics with high-performance carbon fiber sheets, custom drone frames & precision CNC composite machining.
Explore Carbon Fiber →Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) is concurrently working on several key components of the programme, including integrated flight control computers, quad-channel software systems, landing gear, and structural test rigs. These systems are being thoroughly tested to ensure their reliability and performance before the first flying prototype is developed.
The design of the GTV has been frozen, allowing ADE to focus on the development of the ground test vehicle. The flying prototype, when developed, will benefit from the extensive testing and evaluation conducted on the GTV, ensuring that any issues are identified and addressed before the first flight.
The Kaveri Derivative Engine, a critical component of the Ghatak programme, is also undergoing testing and refinement. The Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) is working towards achieving Final Certification of the engine by the end of this year or early 2027. Recent flight trials in Russia and ongoing optimisation efforts with the help of a private-sector company are expected to yield significant improvements in the engine's performance.
The GTV is a testament to the programme's commitment to rigorous testing and validation. By investing in the development of a comprehensive ground test vehicle, the Ghatak programme is ensuring that the aircraft is thoroughly evaluated before its first flight, reducing the risk of delays and setbacks.
