Kaveri Dry Engine Nears Certification: A Crucial Milestone for India's Stealth UCAV\n\nThe recent headlines about India's Kaveri dry engine achieving 48.5 kN of thrust during Russian trials have generated renewed interest. However, this milestone is not new. The DRDO's GTRE had previously announced the Kaveri dry engine achieved 48.5 kN of thrust during a high-altitude trial in Russia in early 2023.\n\nThe test program included the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) and the Gromov Flight Research Institute. In February 2023, reports indicated the Kaveri engine had participated in a series of high-altitude trials in Russia, in which the engine was tested in different pressure, Mach-number, and thrust conditions. The reported result was 48.5 kN of dry thrust, which exceeded the approximately 46 kN simulated target.\n\nIndia uses an Il-76 flying test bed based in Moscow, and the Kaveri engine had been operated on the aircraft during testing. NDTV reported on 28 September that the Kaveri dry engine has now come through a round of high-altitude and flight trials in Russia, in which the engine was tested across different ambient pressures, Mach numbers, and thrust demands.\n\nThe next step is for CEMILAC (the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification) to examine the test data before granting airworthiness clearance. A successful test result does not automatically make an engine suitable for operational service, as the engine must demonstrate repeatability, reliability, endurance, and compliance with airworthiness requirements before it can be cleared for a specific application.\n\nThe Kaveri dry engine's most important near-term application is India's Ghatak stealth UCAV. Unlike Tejas, which requires an afterburning fighter engine with substantially greater thrust requirements, Ghatak is being designed around a propulsion requirement more compatible with a non-afterburning engine.\n\nThe latest reports indicate that, following certification, the Kaveri derivative is expected to move towards integration with Ghatak, followed by flight testing of the complete aircraft. A separate Times of India report similarly indicated the engine had completed its Russian trials and that certification and integration with Ghatak are the next stages.\n\nThe Kaveri engine program has undergone significant evolution, with the original 1990s-era design targeting 45 kN of thrust. The program subsequently evolved into derivatives, including the dry engine intended for unmanned applications. The 48.5 kN result demonstrated that the dry derivative could meet its revised thrust target under high-altitude test conditions.\n\nThe current significance lies upon whether that technology can now make the next transition—from test-bed engine to certified aircraft propulsion system. If CEMILAC certification, integration, and subsequent Ghatak flight testing are completed successfully, the Kaveri program will have entered into a very different phase.\n\nIn conclusion, the Kaveri dry engine's certification is a crucial milestone for India's stealth UCAV program, and its successful integration with Ghatak will pave the way for the development of a cutting-edge unmanned combat aircraft.
