India's Tejas MkII Program Faces Uncertain Future Amid Delays and Competition

The Tejas MkII program, a crucial component of India's military modernization efforts, is facing significant delays that could jeopardize its lead over the Su-57. Sources indicate that the aircraft's first flight, initially set for 2025, will now occur in 2027, two years behind schedule.

This delay is particularly concerning given the program's four-year head start over the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The AMCA's first flight is planned for 2028, and the program's progress has been steady, with the first flight of the AMCA expected to take place in the next two years.

The Tejas MkII program was initially expected to replace the MiG-29, Jaguar, and Mirage-2000, with a combined fleet strength of nearly 200 aircraft. However, the delays have put the program at risk, and the Indian Air Force (IAF) may now have to consider alternative options, including the Su-57.

The Su-57, a 5th-gen jet, has been gaining attention in India, and the IAF may now have a choice between a 4.5-gen jet and a 5th-gen jet. This decision will have significant implications for India's military modernization efforts and its ability to counter emerging threats.

The delays in the Tejas MkII program are attributed to various factors, including funding issues and technical challenges. The program's funding was officially approved in 2022, but the first flight was delayed, and the program is now running behind schedule.

The IAF has committed to procure 120 units of the Tejas MkII, but the delays have put this plan at risk. The program's second phase, which involves the procurement of 80 more units, is also in jeopardy. The IAF may now have to consider alternative options, including the Su-57, which could potentially bridge the gap between the 4.5-gen and 5th-gen jet technologies.

The HAL has offered to clear Limited Series Production of the aircraft, which could allow the program to enter service earlier than anticipated. However, this option is still uncertain, and the program's future remains unclear.

The developmental flight trials of the Tejas MkII are also facing challenges, including the F-414 engine deal with GE. The talks on Technical Rounds have been completed, but the cost of ToT and other tooling supplies is still being negotiated. The deal is expected to be concluded soon, but the uncertainty surrounding the program's future remains.

The AMCA program, which is being developed by private sector companies, is gaining momentum, and the IAF may now have to consider alternative options, including the Su-57. The AMCA's first flight is planned for 2028, and the program's progress has been steady.

The IAF may now have to consider alternative options, including the Su-57, which could potentially bridge the gap between the 4.5-gen and 5th-gen jet technologies. The future of the Tejas MkII program remains uncertain, and the IAF will have to make a decision soon to ensure that its military modernization efforts are on track.

The Indian government and the IAF will have to work together to ensure that the Tejas MkII program is back on track.
