A senior IAF official has acknowledged the aircraft's significant advancements, but emphasized that it still lags behind top 5th gen fighters like the F-35 and J-20.\n\nThe Su-57's stealth, sensor fusion, and networking capabilities are crucial for comparison with these aircraft. The F-35, for example, has been designed heavily around sensor fusion, networked operations, and low observability. The J-20 has also evolved rapidly, with China producing the aircraft in significant numbers.\n\nAccording to the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), China has more than 300 J-20s in service by early 2026. This has significant implications for India's evaluation of the Su-57. A small number of imported fifth-generation fighters would create a separate logistics, training, weapons, and maintenance ecosystem. An IAF source previously told IDRW that maintaining only two Su-57 squadrons could affect long-term force planning, with such a limited fleet potentially having to be reserved for specialized missions rather than routine operations.\n\nRussia has offered to transfer some jets on an immediate basis and has held talks with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to prepare a proposal for local production of the jet at the same HAL plant that was earlier used to manufacture Su-30MKI in India. However, for local production to take place, the IAF will need to commit to procure at least 100 units, which would put additional pressure on the budget.\n\nThe IAF is fully committed to procuring more Rafale F4 Plus jets from the French maker Dassault, which will be locally manufactured in the country. The price and flexibility reports for the Su-57 are to be submitted, including the cost of each jet and levels of technology transfer (ToT) to be offered to India.\n\nIn conclusion, the IAF's evaluation of the Su-57 is critical, and the aircraft's limited appeal is a major concern.
