Indian Navy's LPD Programme Heats Up with Multiple Foreign Design Offerings

The Indian Navy's ambitious plan to acquire four Landing Platform Docks (LPDs) is gaining momentum, with several foreign design contenders vying for the coveted contract. Recent tie-ups between Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Navantia, a Spanish shipbuilding company, have sparked renewed interest in Spain's Juan Carlos I Class of LPDs. However, other contenders, including state-owned Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL), Cochin Shipyard (CSL), Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), and Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), are also in the fray.

The Indian Navy has issued a Request for Information (RFI) with specific requirements for the LPDs, including a "through deck" design, a capacity for 2 heavy-lift helicopters, a length of 200 meters, and a range of 10,000 nautical miles. The LPDs are expected to operate 12 special-ops helicopters and 2 naval UAVs, with a crew of 530 and embarked troops of 900.

  • Design Requirements: The Indian Navy's RFI has set a clear set of design requirements for the LPDs, including a "through deck" design, a capacity for 2 heavy-lift helicopters, and a length of 200 meters.
  • Contenders' Designs: Several foreign design contenders are vying for the contract, including Spain's Juan Carlos I Class, South Korea's Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship, and France's Mistral-class LPDs.
  • Design Challenges: Each of the contenders' designs faces significant design challenges to meet the Indian Navy's requirements, including length, displacement, and propulsion system modifications.

The French Naval Group has tied up with GRSE and HSL to offer their Mistral-class LPDs, which come close to the 200-meter length requirement but may require significant modifications to meet the Indian Navy's specifications. The Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship offered by South Korea meets the length requirements but falls short of the 20,000-tonne displacement requirement. The Juan Carlos I class offered by L&T and Navantia exceeds the length limit and may require major redesign to meet the Indian Navy's requirements.
