India's Indigenous IRST System Takes Flight: A Closer Look\n\nThe Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE) has made significant progress in the development of its indigenous airborne infrared sensing technology. To evaluate the performance of this technology, IRDE has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for flying test-bed services to evaluate its Long Range Detection and Tracking System (LRDTS).\n\nThe proposed campaign will utilise a modified Hawker 800 series aircraft, also known as the British Aerospace BAE 125-800A, as the test aircraft. This aircraft will be equipped with two hardware prototypes, referred to as SB1 and SB2, which will be evaluated as part of the campaign.\n\nThe system architecture outlined in the RFP consists of a nose-mounted Sensor Head Unit (SHU) that weighs approximately 25 kg and has a power rating of around 350 watts. A separate Processing Unit (PU) has a weight of around 14 kg and a power requirement of approximately 250 watts.\n\nThe sensor and processing architecture will be interfaced with the aircraft's onboard test systems to collect tracking data during flight. The proposed avionics interface includes two ARINC 818 Fibre Channel links for video transmission, along with MIL-STD-1553B and Ethernet connectivity with a Mission Computer Simulator installed in the aircraft cabin.\n\nThe RFP calls for approximately 45 flight hours on the Hawker testbed with a separate L-39 Albatros aircraft being used as the target for around 30 hours of the planned campaign. The flights are intended to evaluate the LRDTS across a broad altitude envelope from approximately 5,000 to 29,000 feet.\n\nTesting will occur in different environmental backgrounds, including land, maritime and industrial regions, as well as different day and night sorties. Such testing is important for an infrared search-and-track system as the background against which an airborne target is detected can have a major impact on sensor performance and tracking.\n\nUnlike conventional radar-based systems, an infrared search-and-track system relies on thermal signatures to detect and track targets. An airborne IRST can therefore provide a passive sensing capability without actively transmitting radar energy.\n\nThe planned LRDTS trials are intended to generate data on the system's ability to detect and track airborne targets across a variety of backgrounds and operating conditions.\n\nThe programme is planned over 45 months with the test campaign based out of Bengaluru.\n\nThis indigenous IRST system has the potential to provide India with a significant advantage in terms of air surveillance and air defence capabilities. The successful development and deployment of this system will be a major milestone in India's efforts to enhance its air power capabilities.\n\nAs the programme progresses, it will be interesting to see how the LRDTS performs in various scenarios and how it compares to existing radar-based systems.\n\nIn conclusion, the development of India's indigenous IRST system is a significant step towards enhancing the country's air power capabilities. The successful completion of the LRDTS trials will be a major achievement for IRDE and the DRDO, and will pave the way for the development of more advanced air surveillance and air defence systems in the future.
