India's Indigenous Expendable Turbojet Engine Program Gains Momentum

India's pursuit of indigenous capabilities in the defense sector has taken a significant leap forward with the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) seeking industry partners to manufacture, assemble, and deliver its 350kg-class turbojet engine. This compact twin-spool gas turbine is specifically designed for expendable platforms, such as cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The engine's compact design allows it to generate 350kg thrust in a small-diameter package, reducing dependence on imported small turbojets. This is a significant development for India's defense sector, as it has been hampered by dependence on imported small turbojets in the past.

The GTRE has issued a scope of work document, which outlines the requirements for the engine's production. The document specifies that the engine will feature a twin-spool engine core around a mixed-flow compressor with separate high- and low-pressure turbines. The engine will also have a dedicated fuel injection system, a digital engine control unit, an alternator, and a gearbox to spin engine accessories.

The scope of work stipulates that six engines are to be delivered in this phase, with three engines to be delivered by each of the two industry partners. The delivery timeline of 36 months is significantly longer than the 18-month timeframe mentioned for the Manik Small Turbofan Engine (MSFE) programme.

However, the decision to add additional industry partners to the expendable engine programme is not just about capacity. It is also about engineering resilience and introducing competition on the basis of cost and delivery times. This is particularly relevant for India's larger missile and UAV programmes, which include the Nirbhay-series cruise missiles and loitering munition swarms.

The addition of a second and arguably third engine production line adds redundancy against being knocked out by disruption at any one factory. This is a critical consideration, as India's defense sector is heavily reliant on imported components and technology. By developing indigenous capabilities, India can reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers and improve its overall defense preparedness.

The GTRE's indigenous engine programme is starting to mature into an industrial base-ready, repeatable production programme. This is a significant achievement, and it marks a major milestone in India's pursuit of indigenous capabilities in the defense sector.

The engine's compact design and high-performance capabilities make it an ideal choice for expendable platforms. The engine's hot section and spinning components are constructed of titanium and superalloy materials, which provide high-temperature, high-strength properties.

The GTRE's decision to seek industry partners for the 350kg-class turbojet engine is a strategic move to ensure the programme's success. By partnering with industry players, the GTRE can leverage their expertise and resources to accelerate the programme's progress. This will not only improve the engine's performance but also reduce the programme's overall cost.

In conclusion, the GTRE's indigenous engine programme is gaining momentum, and the 350kg-class turbojet engine is a significant development in this programme. The engine's compact design, high-performance capabilities, and indigenous production make it an ideal choice for India's defense sector. The GTRE's decision to seek industry partners will ensure the programme's success and improve India's overall defense preparedness.
