A High-Stakes Challenge: Developing a Heavy-Fuel VTOL Logistics Drone

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has taken a significant step in its quest to develop an indigenous heavy-fuel internal-combustion-engine VTOL logistics drone. The proposed unmanned aircraft is designed to support Indian Army posts operating at extreme altitudes along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC). Autonomous Capability: A Must-Have Feature

The system is expected to conduct as many as five sorties per day, indicating that DRDO is seeking a reusable logistics platform rather than a one-time delivery system. Such a capability could allow a relatively small fleet to support multiple remote posts and substantially increase the frequency of supplies reaching frontline units. However, the challenge doesn't end there. The drone must retain full autonomous capability in GNSS-denied and jamming environments, using resilient navigation and autonomous flight-control algorithms to complete missions without continuous satellite positioning. This is particularly relevant for operations along the LAC and LoC, where electronic warfare could disrupt satellite navigation and communications during a conflict.
