India's Air Force Embarks on a Transformative Journey

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has set its sights on a bold goal: to have more than 50% of its fighter fleet comprising fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft by 2050. This ambitious plan marks a significant shift away from the current fleet of 4.5-generation fighters, which have been the backbone of the IAF's combat capabilities for decades.

The transition to fifth- and sixth-generation fighters will be a gradual process, with multiple phases and milestones along the way. To meet this challenge, the IAF plans to procure 120 aircraft in the initial batches, with another 120 potentially being acquired in a second batch featuring improvements introduced during the 2040s. The production rate of approximately 20-25 aircraft per year will need to be sustained by the private-sector company selected to manufacture the AMCA. Achieving a 50% share of fifth- and sixth-generation aircraft in the IAF's combat fleet is technically possible if AMCA production reaches peak capacity by 2038-2040.

However, a more conservative and realistic estimate would place the share at 35-45%, with advanced 4.5-generation fighters continuing to perform routine air defence and standoff strike missions alongside manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) systems. The IAF has also expressed interest in participating in a future sixth-generation fighter programme, which may account for only around 10% of the overall fifth- and sixth-generation fleet composition.

The remaining share would comprise approximately 30-35% Rafale and upgraded Su-30MKI fighters, while the Tejas Mk1A and Tejas Mk2 would account for another 25-30% of the combat fleet. The IAF's ambitious plan to revamp its fighter fleet is a testament to its commitment to staying ahead of the curve in terms of technological advancements and combat capabilities.
