India's fighter technology has taken a significant leap forward with the development of the Tejas Mk2 medium-weight fighter. This aircraft is designed to have a substantially higher level of indigenous content than its predecessor, the Tejas Mk1/Mk1A, with a target of 82-85% indigenous content by value at maturity.

The Tejas Mk2 is not just a larger fighter manufactured in India, but a comprehensive effort to control the design, airframe, avionics, mission systems, and sensors of the aircraft. The airframe is being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), with extensive use of carbon-fibre composite structures and advanced metallic alloys.

The aircraft's digital flight-control architecture is being developed around an indigenous quadruplex digital fly-by-wire system, which is a critical technology in modern fighter aircraft. The cockpit is also expected to rely heavily on Indian-developed systems, including the Wide Area Display and associated mission and cockpit software.

Electronic warfare is another area where the Mk2 is expected to benefit from India's expanding indigenous technology base. The aircraft is planned to incorporate the Unified Electronic Warfare Suite (UEWS) along with indigenous missile-approach warning and countermeasure technologies developed by DRDO laboratories.

One of the most significant elements of the indigenous sensor architecture will be the Uttam AESA radar, developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE). Integration of an Indian AESA radar into the Tejas Mk2 would represent a major milestone in India's fighter technology development.

However, the Tejas Mk2 will not be completely indigenous from its first prototype. The GE F414 engine remains the most important external dependency during the initial development phase. The prototype aircraft will use imported F414-INS6 engines while India prepares for domestic production under the GE-HAL arrangement.

The significance of the Mk2 lies in where India is attempting to establish technological sovereignty. The country is moving beyond simply manufacturing an aircraft designed around foreign subsystems and toward controlling the airframe, flight controls, mission computer, radar, electronic warfare system, displays, and other core technologies.

The Tejas Mk2 is expected to serve as a technological bridge toward the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Experience gained in integrating indigenous sensors, avionics, flight-control systems, and weapons on Mk2 could directly benefit India's future fifth-generation fighter programme.

The propulsion question remains the major exception. India's inability to immediately provide an indigenous high-thrust engine means the Mk2 will initially depend on the F414. However, the parallel effort to establish domestic F414 production could provide Indian industry with valuable experience in advanced turbofan manufacturing while the longer-term 120 kN-class engine for AMCA Mk2 is developed.

If the projected 82-85% indigenous content is achieved, the Tejas Mk2 would represent a major step forward from the original LCA programme. More importantly, it would demonstrate that India can progressively localise not merely aircraft structures but the sophisticated digital, electronic, and sensor technologies that determine modern fighter capability. This achievement would be a significant milestone in India's journey towards self-reliance in fighter technology, paving the way for future advancements in the field.
