Unsung Heroism: India and Italy Commemorate a Shared Legacy

Naik Yeshwant Ghadge: An Indian Soldier's Unwavering Bravery in World War II\n\nIn a poignant tribute to the indomitable spirit of a fallen soldier, Italy's Montone Municipality and the Indian Embassy in Italy jointly commemorated Naik Yeshwant Ghadge, a Victoria Cross recipient from the Second World War.\n\nGhadge, a 24-year-old soldier from the 3/5th Mahratta Light Infantry, now known as the Maratha Light Infantry, demonstrated unwavering bravery in the face of overwhelming odds. On 10 July 1944, he single-handedly captured a post at Morlupo, Upper Tiber Valley in Italy, but ultimately lost his life in the process.\n\nAccording to the National Army Museum in London, Ghadge's citation reads: 'Without hesitation, and well knowing that none were left to accompany him, Naik Yeshwant Ghadge rushed the machine gun post.'\n\nHis actions were a testament to his courage, determination, and devotion to duty. Despite knowing the odds against him, Ghadge fearlessly charged forward, throwing a grenade that knocked out the machine gun and firer, and then shooting one of the gun crew with his Tommy gun.\n\nIn a final act of bravery, Ghadge grasped his gun by the barrel and beat to death the remaining two men of the gun crew.\n\nTragically, Ghadge was shot in the chest and back by enemy snipers and died in the post he had captured single-handedly.\n\nThe commemoration event, which included a virtual interaction between Indian and Italian students, aimed to highlight Ghadge's valour and sacrifice. The exchange enabled Indian and Italian children to learn about his bravery, share experiences, and connect across borders.\n\nThe event is part of the Embassy's efforts to highlight the shared history and enduring friendship between India and Italy.\n\nGhadge's body was never recovered, but his legacy lives on. He is commemorated on the Cassino War Memorial, Italy, and with a statue at the Tahasil Office, Mangaon in the Raigad District of India.\n\nAs we remember Naik Yeshwant Ghadge, we are reminded of the importance of valour, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship between nations.\n\nHis actions in World War II remain an inspiration to both India and Italy, serving as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of bravery and selflessness.
