Beijing received MiG-21F-13 aircraft and production-related assistance from the Soviet Union, but the Sino-Soviet split fundamentally changed the situation. Soviet technical assistance was disrupted, leaving China with aircraft and technical information but without continued industrial support.
Chinese engineers were forced to solve many of the remaining production and development problems themselves. The resulting aircraft became the J-7, China's indigenous development of the MiG-21F-13 lineage. India's aerospace industry eventually had to make the much harder transition from licensed manufacturing to indigenous design through programmes such as the Tejas.
The lesson from this story is clear: licensed production builds manufacturing capability, but indigenous design evolution builds design authority. China's exploitation of the MiG-21 lineage gave its aerospace industry decades of experience progressively modifying a proven fighter architecture. This experience has been invaluable in the development of China's modern combat-aircraft industry.
