An official SIDM industry delegation recently traveled to the Indian Air Force’s Sulur base in Coimbatore to engage directly with 43 Wing personnel and discuss the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) needs of the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas. The visit brought together senior IAF officers and representatives from leading Indian aerospace firms to exchange insights on operational demands and to explore ways to strengthen domestic support capabilities. During the session, the delegation examined the current state of Tejas sustainment, emphasizing the necessity of reliable component supply, efficient maintenance routines, and rigorous testing protocols. They highlighted how direct user engagement enables manufacturers to observe real‑world usage conditions and receive actionable feedback on recurring technical or logistical challenges. Key topics included increasing Indian industry participation in the production of critical airframe components, expanding in‑house repair capacity, and establishing standardized testing procedures that align with IAF operational timelines. Officials stressed that a robust domestic ecosystem encompassing spare parts manufacturing, scheduled maintenance, and specialized calibration services will be vital for sustaining the fleet as it expands its operational footprint. The dialogue also addressed logistical considerations such as inventory management of spare components, turnaround time for repairs, and the integration of advanced diagnostic tools to detect wear and malfunction early. By aligning industry capabilities with the specific demands observed during flight operations, the collaboration aims to reduce reliance on imported spare parts and shorten maintenance downtime. These discussions underscore the strategic importance of developing a self‑reliant aerospace sector that can meet the growing demands of the Tejas program, especially as the aircraft moves toward higher sortie rates and broader geographic deployment. A strong domestic supply chain will enhance operational readiness, lower lifecycle costs, and reinforce national security. The dialogue also addressed logistical considerations such as inventory management of spare components, turnaround time for repairs, and the integration of advanced diagnostic tools to detect wear and malfunction early. This collaboration secures a robust domestic ecosystem to sustain the expanding Tejas fleet. Looking ahead, the collaboration is expected to accelerate the rollout of indigenous spare parts production, streamline maintenance cycles, and enable the IAF to sustain a larger Tejas fleet without excessive dependence on foreign suppliers, thereby enhancing operational readiness, lowering lifecycle costs, and reinforcing national security. Industry participants welcomed the opportunity to align their product development roadmaps with real‑world operational requirements, noting that collaborative workshops and joint testing initiatives can accelerate technology transfer and foster a culture of continuous improvement. By fostering such partnerships, the Indian aerospace sector can build a resilient supply chain, improve maintenance efficiency, and ensure the Tejas platform remains combat‑effective across diverse operational theaters. Overall, the SIDM delegation’s visit demonstrates a proactive approach to strengthening the Tejas sustainment ecosystem, positioning India to maintain a competitive edge in advanced fighter aviation while nurturing a homegrown aerospace industry.
