Safety Concerns Mount Ahead of RSS Chief's New York Gathering

Safety concerns are mounting ahead of the upcoming Universal Oneness Celebration, an event scheduled to take place on August 29 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The gathering, led by RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat, has sparked controversy, with two prominent Hindu American groups issuing safety advisories to attendees.

The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) and HinduACTion have urged participants to remain vigilant, citing concerns over potential protests and demands to cancel the event. In a statement, HAF advised attendees to 'stay situationally aware, remain calm, and keep interactions civil.' The organization also encouraged participants to respect the rights of others to assemble, protest, and express their views, while avoiding confrontations with individuals making provocative or threatening statements.

HAF further requested that attendees report any threats, vandalism, or suspected hate incidents to security personnel or law enforcement. The organization also urged Hindu temples and community centers in New York to exercise additional caution around high-profile events.

HinduACTion issued a similar advisory, asking Hindu residents and attendees to document any threats, harassment, or 'expressions of bigotry.' The organization emphasized the importance of reporting incidents promptly to the NYPD and other authorities, while staying safe and looking out for one another.

The warnings from Hindu American groups come as the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) expresses concern over Bhagwat's visit. The USCIRF has called on the US government to consider sanctions against RSS members and Indian officials, citing concerns over India's religious freedom record.

India has previously rejected USCIRF's assessments as biased and interference in its internal affairs. Former Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant has also joined the chorus of opposition, asking New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani to stop the Madison Square Garden program.

Despite the controversy, the RSS has defended the gathering as an inclusive interfaith engagement. Sunil Ambekar, the organization's national publicity chief, emphasized that Bhagwat would communicate with a diverse, multicultural, and multi-faith audience. Ambekar stated that the event reflects Bharatiya ethos, which is fundamentally inclusive and welcoming to all.

As the Universal Oneness Celebration approaches, concerns over safety and inclusivity persist. The event organizers, the RSS, and Hindu American groups must work together to ensure a peaceful and respectful gathering. The outcome of this event will have significant implications for Hindu American communities and the broader discussion on interfaith engagement.
