The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a revolutionary electric, air-breathing propulsion system to operate satellites in Very Low-Earth Orbits (VLEO). This cutting-edge technology aims to harness atmospheric particles to produce thrust, overcoming atmospheric drag in the extremely tenuous VLEO atmosphere.

The project, titled 'Air Breathing Space Based Propulsion (Electric) for VLEO', seeks to indigenously develop defence and strategic technologies by Indian industry. The DRDO has invited industry bids for the project, with a focus on reducing propellant needs and increasing Earth observation capabilities.

The project's reference number is DTDF/06/13516/DSP/ABEP/XI/LM/01. Bidders are required to submit two-bid packages comprising technical-commercial and price proposals through the Defence Procurement Portal. The project is being pursued through the route of 'Grant-in-Aid' under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme.

The DRDO's goal is to develop a propulsion technology suited for operating satellites in VLEO, an orbit significantly lower than regular low-Earth orbits. This technology would enable a spacecraft to remain in such an orbit for extended durations, reducing the need for large amounts of propellant. The advantages of operating satellites in VLEO include improved viewing resolution and reduced atmospheric drag.

However, the challenge of developing such a propulsion system is enormous. It would need to harness atmospheric particles, process and accelerate them into exhaust to produce enough thrust to overcome atmospheric drag, all in the extremely tenuous atmosphere at VLEO. The project's success would enable India to significantly enhance its Earth observation and reconnaissance capabilities, solidifying its position as a leader in space technology.

The DRDO's commitment to indigenously developing defence and strategic technologies is evident in this project. The organisation is focused on reducing dependence on foreign technology and developing capabilities that can be used for national security. The air-breathing propulsion system is a critical component of this strategy, enabling India to operate satellites in VLEO and enhance its Earth observation and reconnaissance capabilities.

The project's success would also have significant implications for the Indian space industry. It would enable the development of new technologies and capabilities, creating new opportunities for Indian industry and enhancing the country's position in the global space market.

In conclusion, the DRDO's Request for Proposal for an air-breathing propulsion system is a significant step forward in the development of space technology in India. The project's success would enable India to significantly enhance its Earth observation and reconnaissance capabilities, solidifying its position as a leader in space technology. The DRDO's commitment to indigenously developing defence and strategic technologies is evident in this project, and the project's success would have significant implications for the Indian space industry.
