The Indian Air Force (IAF) is facing a growing threat from drone incursions along its western and northern borders. To counter this threat, the IAF is looking to upgrade its fleet of Rafale fighters with a new counter-drone system developed by the French.

The system, dubbed LADAC (Lutte Anti-Drone sur Avion de Chasse), uses Thales' 68mm Aculeus-LG laser-guided rockets. These rockets are launched from a TELSON 12 JF rocket pod, guided by the Rafale's TALIOS targeting pod. This system represents a cost-effective solution for intercepting drones and loitering munitions, addressing a major challenge in modern air combat.

The Rafale's ability to engage inexpensive drones with expensive missiles has proven to be a significant challenge in modern air combat. The IAF is increasingly facing drone incursions along both the western and northern borders, and the current crop of 36 Rafale EH and DH fighters is not equipped to handle this threat effectively.

The French experience in the Middle East, where Rafale fighters have seen combat with Iran, is illustrative of this challenge. French Rafale fighters have engaged Shahed attack-type drones with their MICA air-to-air missiles, but this approach has proven to be operationally effective but also costly. A missile costing several hundred thousand euros could be used to destroy a one-way attack drone costing only a few hundred euros.

Sustaining this approach in prolonged combat operations would swiftly drain a fighter of its missile inventory while simultaneously incurring exorbitant costs in ordnance expenditure. The LADAC concept provides a viable solution to this challenge. By engaging drones with laser-guided rockets, Rafale pilots can destroy slow-moving, fixed-wing drones with a relatively inexpensive projectile.

A single TELSON 12 JF pod can hold twelve Aculeus-LG rockets, and a fighter equipped with two such pods can carry 24 guided rockets on each sortie. This vastly increases the number of engagements open to the pilot as compared to carrying only Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM).

The Aculeus-LG fills a void in the Rafale's current armament. The 30mm internal cannon is useful only at close ranges and requires accurate gun-solutions to engage highly maneuverable aerial targets. Conversely, while MICA missiles offer excellent range, they tend to be far more costly per engagement than guided rockets.

The laser-guided rocket option would see service in a niche role of engaging aerial targets at ranges of several kilometers, while leaving more expensive missiles to engage high-value targets like enemy fighters or cruise missiles. Since LADAC is designed to work on the French Rafale's F4 software standard, the only major hurdle to integrating the system onto India's Rafale fighters would involve software and systems integration rather than changes to the airframe itself.

India's Rafale fighters are currently slated to receive several India-Specific Enhancements (ISE) and as such, software updates would be familiar territory to the IAF. Such a solution would see India pursue an indigenous option to either complement or replace the French rockets while also taking advantage of the opportunity to reduce reliance on foreign weapons and build an expanded domestic precision-guided munitions industry.

Instead of relying solely on French rockets, India could eventually develop its own alternatives which are compatible with both the Rafale and indigenous fighters. Another potential path forward involves industrial cooperation. Thales has a significant footprint in India already, in terms of both manufacturing and technology partnerships. If technology transfer agreements were to be concluded, the production of either the Aculeus-LG rockets or selected components could be transferred to India.

This would allow companies like Bharat Electronics Limited, Bharat Dynamics Limited, or private defence contractors to assemble or manufacture guided rocket components in-country. Not only would this reduce costs and increase supply security, but it would also allow India to greatly increase its wartime stockpiles without having to rely on overseas production.

The long-term outlook for the IAF's future requirements is also relevant to this discussion. The MRFA competition which will see the IAF procure additional Rafale fighters will see greater interest in the fighter's potential with a cost-effective counter-drone capability. A larger Rafale fleet which possesses an economical option to engage drones will see the IAF's ability to respond to emerging aerial threats improved, while preserving more expensive MICA and Meteor missiles for traditional air-to-air combat.

A Cost-Effective Solution for the IAF

The LADAC system represents a cost-effective solution for the IAF to counter drone threats. By using laser-guided rockets, the IAF can destroy slow-moving, fixed-wing drones with relatively inexpensive projectiles, vastly increasing the number of engagements open to the pilot.

Industrial Cooperation and Indigenous Development

India could pursue industrial cooperation with France to develop its own alternatives to the Aculeus-LG rockets. This would allow India to reduce reliance on foreign weapons and build an expanded domestic precision-guided munitions industry.

The Future of Air Combat

The LADAC system has the potential to revolutionize air combat. By providing a cost-effective solution for engaging drones, the IAF can improve its ability to respond to emerging aerial threats while preserving more expensive missiles for traditional air-to-air combat.
