Revitalizing the Su-30MKI Fleet: India's Super Sukhoi Upgrade Program\n\nThe Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has cleared the Super Sukhoi Upgrade Program, a 63,000 crore initiative aimed at upgrading 84 Su-30MKI aircraft. The program, which includes developing two test beds and phased testing, is expected to be completed in five years, with deliveries starting from 2033-34.\n\nHAL will lead the upgrade, with Russian assistance for flight control system integration and certification. The upgrade will involve the deployment of newer avionics and radar systems, including the Virupaksha AESA radar and indigenous IRST sensor.\n\nThe Virupaksha AESA radar will replace the older Russian-origin NIIP N011M Bars passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar, while the indigenous IRST sensor will provide advanced targeting capabilities. The upgrade will also include the installation of new glass cockpit displays and mission computers.\n\nThe Su-30MKI will also be equipped with the Angad electronic warfare suite, which will enhance the aircraft's survivability and combat effectiveness. Russia is expected to assist with flight control system integration and certification, while the bulk of the work will be done indigenously at HAL's Nashik and Bengaluru facilities.\n\nThe second phase of the Su-30 upgrades is expected to start once the first phase deliveries commence. The Indian Air Force (IAF) plans to upgrade 175 more Su-30MKI aircraft in phases, with both HAL and Russian OEMs upgrading these jets in different systems to fast-track the program.\n\nRussia has offered its own upgrade package, which includes upgrading the AL-31F engines with the newer AL-41F1S turbofan. However, it is unclear if the IAF will opt for engine upgrade options.\n\nThe IAF plans to operate the Su-30MKI till 2070, with all aircraft except some older Su-30s being upgraded to newer avionics and systems. DRDO and HAL are also working to incorporate newer weapons in the aircraft, including a complete upgrade to the mission computers that will fast-track local weapons integration in the near future.\n\nThe Super Sukhoi Upgrade Program is a significant step towards revitalizing the Su-30MKI fleet, which has been the backbone of the IAF's air power for several decades. The upgrade will enhance the aircraft's combat effectiveness, survivability, and overall performance, making it a formidable asset for the IAF.\n\nAs the program progresses, it will be interesting to see how the IAF and its industry partners work together to deliver this complex upgrade. With the IAF planning to operate the Su-30MKI till 2070, the Super Sukhoi Upgrade Program is a critical investment in the country's air power capabilities.
