The Indian Air Force is on the threshold of acquiring a significant upgrade to its Rafale fleet, with the introduction of Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology across the radar and electronic-warfare architecture. This cutting-edge upgrade promises to revolutionize the way the IAF operates in the skies, providing a major electronic warfare advantage.

The application of GaN technology across the Rafale's radar and electronic-warfare systems is a major departure from the earlier Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) technology used in earlier-generation AESA radar hardware. GaN technology offers higher power density and improved efficiency, enabling the Rafale to detect and track targets with unprecedented precision.

The Rafale's RBE2-AA radar is set to benefit significantly from the GaN upgrade, with peak power increasing to 20-22 kW. This represents a substantial improvement over the earlier GaAs-based configurations, which had a peak power of approximately 11-12 kW. The increased power density and efficiency of the GaN-based RBE2-AA radar will enable the Rafale to detect and track targets more effectively, even in the most contested electromagnetic environments.

But the GaN upgrade is not limited to the RBE2-AA radar alone. The SPECTRA electronic-warfare system, which uses distributed apertures located around the aircraft, will also benefit from the GaN technology. The application of GaN technology to these apertures can provide additional RF power and improved electronic performance, potentially enabling new operating modes and enhancing the system's ability to detect, classify, and respond to hostile emitters.

The combination of a more powerful AESA radar and increasingly capable electronic warfare sensors creates a much more integrated electromagnetic warfare system. This is a significant development for the IAF, which can potentially provide a major electronic warfare advantage in contested environments.

The development also has direct implications for India's proposed acquisition of additional Rafales. The IAF already operates 36 Rafales delivered under the earlier configuration, while any future acquisition could potentially introduce a substantially newer sensor and electronic-warfare architecture. This makes the configuration negotiated for India's next Rafale order particularly important. If the newer GaN-based RBE2 and SPECTRA technologies are mature and available within the delivery timeframe, India would have an incentive to avoid creating a large technological gap between its existing Rafales and future aircraft.

The development also establishes a tougher benchmark for India's indigenous fighter electronics programmes. India's Uttam AESA radar family is progressing toward wider deployment, including on the Tejas Mk1A and planned future platforms. The challenge is no longer simply to develop an AESA radar, but to match the complete ecosystem involving GaN transmit/receive modules, thermal management, signal processing, electronic protection, electronic attack, and sensor fusion.

For India, this distinction is important. Radar power alone does not determine combat effectiveness. A modern fighter must combine active sensing, passive detection, electronic warfare, networking, and weapons into a coherent system. The Rafale's move toward GaN across both RBE2 and SPECTRA therefore represents more than a semiconductor upgrade. It demonstrates the direction in which advanced combat aircraft are evolving: toward integrated electromagnetic warfare platforms in which radar and electronic warfare systems increasingly complement each other.

The acquisition of additional Rafales with the GaN-based RBE2 and SPECTRA technologies will be a significant step forward for the IAF, providing a major electronic warfare advantage in contested environments. As the IAF continues to evolve and modernize its capabilities, it is clear that the Rafale will play a critical role in shaping the future of airpower in the region.
