Pune-Based Sagar Defence Expands into Warship, Submarine Manufacturing\n\nIn a significant development for India's defence sector, Pune-based Sagar Defence Engineering (SDE) has been granted a licence to design, manufacture, and supply naval defence platforms, including warships and submarines. This licence marks a major expansion for SDE, which was founded by former Merchant Navy officer Capt. Nikunj Parashar around a decade ago.

From Humble Beginnings to Defence Giant

SDE began its journey in a 150-square-foot apartment, focusing on autonomous and unmanned maritime technologies. The company has since grown into a leading player in the defence sector, working on unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) for defence and maritime applications.

Navy Already Utilising SDE's Technologies

The Indian Navy is already using SDE's unmanned underwater vehicles in mine-countermeasure programmes, while its maritime drones are also used by the Navy and Coast Guard. According to Parashar, the licence is a proof of the government's trust in private organisations capable of taking on the complete development cycle for specified naval platforms.

Licence Covers Surface and Underwater Vessels

The licence covers the design, manufacture, construction, integration, assembly, testing, and supply of specified naval defence platforms and associated systems. This is a significant departure from SDE's previous industrial licence, which covered specified arms, explosives, and ammunition.

Relevance to India's Defence Strategy

The licence comes at a time when India is increasingly focusing on unmanned surface and underwater systems, mine countermeasures, and distributed maritime operations. The recent fighting in the Strait of Hormuz highlights the importance of sea control and sea denial, concepts that could be particularly relevant to India's defence strategy.

No Specific Design Disclosed

While SDE has not publicly disclosed a specific warship or submarine design that they intend to build under the new licence, the licence marks a significant milestone for the company and the Indian defence sector as a whole.

Conclusion

The licence granted to SDE is a testament to the government's trust in private organisations capable of taking on complex defence projects. As SDE continues to expand its capabilities, it will be interesting to see how the company leverages this licence to contribute to India's defence sector.
