India's Defence Industry Expands into Europe with Portugal Partnership

In a significant development for the Indian defence sector, a leading Indian defence company, Flying Wedge Defence and Aerospace (FWDA), has partnered with a prominent Portuguese defence and aerospace firm, KEYDEF, to manufacture its cutting-edge unmanned systems in Portugal. The strategic partnership aims to tap into the European market and broader NATO sales, marking a major milestone in India's efforts to establish itself as a significant player in the global defence industry.

The agreement, signed at KEYDEF's facilities in Braga in the presence of India's ambassador to Portugal, Puneet Roy Kundal, paves the way for the manufacture of FWDA's advanced unmanned systems, including the YAMA interceptor and the KaalBhairav autonomous UAV, in Portugal. These systems are designed to cater to the needs of international customers, with the YAMA interceptor being marketed as an autonomous interceptor for countering hostile drones, while the KaalBhairav is an autonomous UAV designed for extended endurance with potential applications in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) roles.

The partnership between FWDA and KEYDEF is expected to drive growth in the production of FWDA's range of spy and surveillance, air-defence, and civilian UAVs, with the companies aiming to scale up production to meet the demands of the global market. KEYDEF, the defence and aerospace arm of the Portuguese technology group Sketchpixel, has committed to investing six million euros in the development of FWDA technologies as part of the deal.

The collaboration also extends to the development of electronic systems and artificial intelligence solutions for the systems under development, with KEYDEF pledging to contribute to research and development in these areas. The ultimate goal of the partnership is to certify the systems developed in Portugal for the NATO market, which would enable broader sales within the alliance. Several NATO member states have expressed interest in acquiring drones, and the certification of FWDA's systems would provide a significant competitive advantage in this market.

The partnership offers FWDA an opportunity to bring Indian-made unmanned systems closer to Europe, leveraging the local talent in Portugal to drive growth and innovation. FWDA's CEO, Suhas Tejaskanda, has hailed Portugal as a gateway to take Indian engineering to Europe, while KEYDEF's chief, Miguel Abreu, has noted that the collaboration would combine the expertise of both countries in defence and aerospace manufacturing.

Beyond manufacturing, the partnership with the University of Minho extends to the development of the KX-7 Shadow UAV, as well as a long-endurance UAV concept capable of operating for up to 100 hours. This collaborative approach to research and development is expected to drive innovation and growth in the defence sector, both in Portugal and India.
