Pakistan's Military Strategy: A Defensive Posture in South Asia

Pakistan's Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, recently made headlines with his comments on the country's military strategy. In an interview with Al Arabiya English, Chaudhry clarified Islamabad's stance on the ongoing military developments in South Asia.

Chaudhry acknowledged India's expanding military capabilities, including missile and air-defence systems. He noted that India has been investing heavily in its defence sector, which has led to significant advancements in its military capabilities. However, Chaudhry emphasized that Pakistan is not seeking an arms race with India.

Instead, Islamabad's military strategy remains focused on self-defence. Chaudhry stressed that Pakistan has no aggressive intentions against any country and is committed to defending itself against any potential aggression. He also highlighted the country's confidence in its defensive capabilities, which enable it to retaliate against any aggression.

The comments come against the backdrop of India's recent military developments, including the successful testing of the surface-to-surface Agni-5 missile. This long-range system has the capability to target threats within a radius of 5,000-km. In recent months, India has also tested several missile systems and developed air-defence systems to counter aircraft, missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Pakistan's military leaders have publicly rejected the description of an India-Pakistan arms race. However, the country continues to maintain a sizeable conventional and strategic military capability. Chaudhry's comments suggest that Islamabad is focused on maintaining a defensive posture, rather than engaging in an arms race with India.

The implications of Pakistan's military strategy are significant. A defensive posture allows Islamabad to focus on its internal security challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Balochistan and the threat posed by terrorist groups. It also enables the country to maintain a strong military presence along its borders, which is essential for its national security.

In conclusion, Pakistan's military strategy remains focused on self-defence, rather than aggressive intentions against any country. The country's confidence in its defensive capabilities and its commitment to maintaining a defensive posture are key aspects of its military strategy. As the security landscape in South Asia continues to evolve, Islamabad's approach will be closely watched by regional and international observers.
