Pakistan and India Engage in Diplomatic Spat Over Naval Incident

A recent incident in the North Arabian Sea has escalated tensions between Pakistan and India, with both nations presenting vastly different accounts of the events that transpired. The incident, which occurred on September 15, has sparked a diplomatic row between the two countries, with Pakistan accusing an Indian warship of provocative maneuvers and India countering that the Pakistani vessel was the aggressor.

The incident took place during the biennial SEASPARK-26 exercise, a naval drill conducted by the Pakistan Navy to enhance its maritime capabilities. According to a statement released by Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, an Indian Navy warship entered the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and engaged in aggressive maneuvers, leading to physical contact between the two vessels. The Pakistani ship, identified as PNS Hunain, a Yarmook-class offshore patrol vessel, suffered damage and was forced to return to port.

Pakistan has termed the incident a serious breach of international law and the 1991 Agreement on Advance Notice concerning Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troop Movements. The country has also summoned India's Charge d'Affaires to Islamabad to lodge a formal protest, further escalating the diplomatic tensions.

However, India has presented a different account of the incident, claiming that the collision occurred in international waters, not within Pakistan's EEZ. Indian sources have alleged that the Pakistani ship approached the Indian warship at high speed, engaging in unsafe and unprofessional behavior. The Indian warship, which was reportedly conducting a surveillance operation, sustained no major damage and continued with its mission.

The incident has raised questions about the exact location and circumstances surrounding the encounter. While an EEZ grants a coastal state certain economic rights over resources, it does not confer full territorial sovereignty over the sea. Therefore, the location of the incident will be crucial in determining the validity of both countries' claims.

The diplomatic spat between Pakistan and India is a reflection of the complex and often tense relationship between the two nations. The incident has sparked concerns about the stability of the region and the potential for further escalation. As both countries engage in diplomatic talks to resolve the issue, the international community will be closely watching the developments.
