Explore CNC Systems โAeronautical Development Agency's Leading-Edge Flap Tender: A Step Towards Indigenous Flight-Control Technology
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has recently floated a tender for the development and supply of five flight-worthy units of the Leading-Edge Flap (LEF) actuation system. This critical component is essential for advanced indigenous flight-control hardware in a next-generation fighter aircraft.
The tender, GEM/2026/B/8090503, seeks five flight-worthy units as part of a combined development and supply requirement. The tender was floated by ADA, Bengaluru, with bids due to close on October 20, 2026. An โน30 lakh Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) has been specified, with the tender value listed as being available in the tender document.
The LEF actuation system is responsible for accurate and reliable movement of the flap. Depending on the architecture, it can involve actuators, mechanical transmission components, drive units, control electronics, and systems designed to detect or prevent asymmetric movement. The wording of the ADA requirement is significantly important, as it does not simply seek supply of an established component; it combines development with flight-worthy units.

Explore Carbon Fiber โThe five units therefore appear to be intended for integration and flight qualification rather than routine spares procurement. ADA has not publicly identified the aircraft associated with this particular tender and so its platform should not be stated as confirmed. However, the requirement fits into the broader development activity surrounding the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
ADA has separately pursued work on components associated with an AMCA leading-edge-flap system, including an angular gearbox, while other publicly discussed development work has involved the Power Drive Unit, Asymmetry Control Unit, and Rotary Gear Actuator. A complete LEF actuation-system requirement would logically be above these individual components within the wider flight-control architecture.
ADA already has experience developing indigenous actuation technology for the LCA Tejas. The agency developed indigenous Leading Edge Actuators and an Airbrake Control Module for the fighter, with the technology subsequently transferred for production. The indigenous actuator package was developed under the long-standing Development of Advanced Linear Actuators (DALIA) programme.
The Tejas effort included actuators for the aircraft's slats, airbrakes, elevons, and rudder, replacing imported systems and establishing an Indian industrial base for flight-control actuation. The new ADA tender suggests that indigenous flight-control technology is continuing to move towards more advanced fighter applications.
For a fifth-generation aircraft such as AMCA, the LEF system would have to operate with high positional accuracy and reliability while integrating with the aircraft's digital flight-control architecture. The successful development and supply of the LEF actuation system would be a significant milestone in the development of indigenous flight-control technology in India. This would not only enhance the country's defense capabilities but also contribute to the growth of the domestic aerospace industry.
