India's Zorawar Light Tank: A High-Altitude Tank System Concept

The Indian Army's requirements for a light tank, influenced by its confrontation with China in 2020, led to the development of the Zorawar light tank. The Army specified high altitude mobility, engine performance, and gun elevation as key areas of demand. The High Altitude Tank System (HATS) concept, which pre-dates Zorawar, was modified to produce a vehicle more specifically focused on the demands of high altitude operations.

The original HATS concept envisioned a vehicle weighing around 36 tonnes, with similar performance to China's light tank. However, the Army wanted to evolve the concept, specifying that the requirement should be dictated by the demands of high altitude operations rather than simply adapting an existing light tank design. This was a crucial difference, as a vehicle optimised for high altitude operations would have to operate in low pressure, cold conditions where the performance of standard equipment can be impaired.

The Army specified a power to weight ratio of roughly 30 horsepower per tonne, which would give the vehicle the mobility to navigate the challenging terrain of a high altitude zone while still retaining the protection and firepower of a battle worthy vehicle. Engine performance is especially important in high altitude conditions as the reduced air pressure means there is less oxygen available for the combustion process. Cold temperatures also present additional challenges to standard combustion engines.

Mobility is also specified as a key requirement. The Army wanted a gun that could be depressed and elevated by a significant degree. This is important in a mountainous environment as it allows the tank to engage opponents on different elevations. A tank that is optimised for flat land has significant limitations when it comes to shooting up or down a slope.

The project has seen the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) work together to develop the vehicle. The requirements for the vehicle subsequently grew to encompass a broader set of capabilities than a standard tank. Counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capability, and a drone for the tank crew were added to the requirement. These additions would allow the tank crew to have greater awareness of their surroundings and provide protection from drone strikes.

The onboard drone would give the tank crew an eye in the sky, allowing them to see around obstacles and get an early warning of enemies approaching. Counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capability provides a layer of protection for the tank itself, countering any drone attacks that might take place.

The Zorawar light tank is a testament to the Indian Army's commitment to developing capabilities that meet the specific demands of high altitude operations. The vehicle's design and capabilities are a result of the Army's requirement for a light tank that can operate effectively in challenging terrain, with a gun that can be depressed and elevated by a significant degree. The Zorawar light tank is a significant development in the Indian Army's capabilities, and its impact will be felt in the years to come.
