India's Tactical Missile Diplomacy: Unlocking the Potential of Pralay in Armenia

The landscape of military-technical cooperation between India and Armenia is undergoing a significant transformation, with the Pralay tactical missile emerging as a key player in this emerging partnership. The Pralay missile, developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has been at the centre of recent discussions between the two nations, with potential export-oriented variants being considered.

The Pralay missile boasts advanced guidance and navigation systems, making it a game-changer in Armenia's military arsenal. With a range of approximately 290 km, the export configuration would be structured in accordance with India's export-control obligations. However, the precise range, payload, and configuration of any Armenian variant would ultimately depend on the final government-to-government agreement and applicable approvals.

The Armenian requirement for the Pralay missile is strategically significant, as it would give Yerevan a mobile precision-strike capability distinct from the artillery and air-defence systems it has already acquired from India. Public reporting has previously linked Armenia's interest in the missile to its requirement for stronger long-range conventional strike capabilities.

The potential Pralay deal would represent a major expansion of India-Armenia defence cooperation, with Armenia already emerging as an important overseas customer for Indian systems, including Pinaka, Akash, ATAGS, and Swathi. Discussions have increasingly moved toward more sophisticated capabilities and possible local industrial participation.

Sources close to the discussions indicate that an Armenian technical and military team could subsequently visit India for familiarisation and possible training activities, including a potential system demonstration or launch. A limited initial acquisition could then serve as an evaluation phase before a larger order, although no final contract or delivery schedule has been officially announced.

The potential export also comes as India seeks to expand the industrial base supporting Pralay. The missile is currently being produced through DRDO's established development-and-production ecosystem, including Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited, and other Indian industries. If foreign demand continues to increase, additional private-sector participation could eventually help expand production capacity.

This would be consistent with India's wider effort to move from limited-rate production of indigenous weapon systems toward an industrial model capable of supporting both domestic requirements and export orders. For Armenia, Pralay would represent a major addition to its precision-strike arsenal. For India, an Armenian contract would be equally significant, marking a shift towards a more industrialized and export-oriented defence sector.

The broader trajectory of the relationship is already moving beyond a traditional buyer-seller model. India and Armenia have discussed joint ventures, local manufacturing, and military-hardware development, while their latest defence engagement has placed greater emphasis on military-technical cooperation and research. As the two nations advance their defence ties, the potential for a Pralay deal looms large, with significant implications for both India's export-oriented defence sector and Armenia's military capabilities.
