A Space Programme Under Threat: Congress Accuses Modi Government of Emasculating ISRO

The Indian space program has been a source of national pride, with numerous achievements in recent years. However, the Congress party has accused the Modi government of strangulating and emasculating the Indian Space Research Organisation, or ISRO, by pursuing an aggressive privatisation agenda.

According to Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, the government's plans will severely limit ISRO's presence in rocket development and manufacture, and transfer its satellite-related assets to private companies. The historic Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh is under threat, and the second spaceport in Tamil Nadu will be handed over to a private company.

Ramesh claims that 100-120 key ISRO professionals have quit in the past few months, and an ex-ISRO chairman has expressed serious doubts about the new privatisation drive. The Congress leader calls for giving scientific and technological institutions full freedom, independence, and professionalism, and freeing them from political patronage and interference.

The Indian Space Program: A Legacy of Achievement

The Indian space program has a rich history, with numerous achievements in recent years. The Chandrayaan-3 mission, which successfully landed on the moon, is a testament to the capabilities and competencies of ISRO. The mission's success is based on the competencies, capabilities, and capacities created over 60 years.

The Founding Fathers of ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation was founded in 1969, with Vikram Sarabhai, Satish Dhawan, Brahm Prakash, UR Rao, and APJ Abdul Kalam instrumental in its conception. These visionaries laid the foundation for the space program, and their legacy continues to inspire and motivate scientists and engineers today.

The Modi Government's Privatisation Agenda

The Modi government's aggressive privatisation agenda for the space program has raised concerns among scientists and engineers. The government's plans to transfer satellite-related assets to private companies and limit ISRO's presence in rocket development and manufacture have been met with resistance from the scientific community.

The Need for Freedom and Independence

The Congress leader's call for giving scientific and technological institutions full freedom, independence, and professionalism is a timely reminder of the need for autonomy in scientific research. The Indian space program has always been driven by a sense of national pride and a desire to push the boundaries of human knowledge.
