In a significant move, India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has asserted the country's potential to become a global shipbuilding hub. Singh made this statement while virtually laying the foundation stone for five expansion projects of the Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Yantra India Ltd. The Defence Minister highlighted India's unique position in the shipbuilding sector, where the country has a large workforce, steel companies, and the drive to adopt cutting-edge technologies.

Singh pointed out that traditional shipbuilding nations such as the USA, UK, France, and the Netherlands have slowly reduced their shipbuilding capacities over the last few decades due to various reasons, including high labour costs and lack of modernisation of old shipyards. He stated that India can capitalise on this "vacuum" in the industry and seize the opportunity to become a global shipbuilding hub. The Defence Minister emphasized that India has the necessary capabilities to become a world-class ship design hub, riding on a large number of engineering and IT talents, artificial intelligence, and a skilled workforce.

The five expansion projects, worth approximately Rs 3,500 crore, include a Rs 2,500 crore shipbuilding hub at Raichak, which will enable the manufacture of 200-metre-long warships. This move is expected to boost indigenous defence manufacturing and create new avenues for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The Raichak facility will be developed as a shipbuilding hub, with an investment of over Rs 2,500 crore, and will be able to manufacture warships of up to 200 metres in length.

The Defence Minister also highlighted the significance of indigenisation of defence manufacturing, citing the example of Operation Sindoor. He stated that the world has seen the prowess of India's indigenous weapon systems and that in the future, there will be no dearth in initiatives to make India's defence requirements met indigenously. Singh emphasized that the five brownfield projects, whose foundation stone was laid on Sunday, will give force to the country's 'Make in India' and 'Make for the World' policies.

The West Bengal government has also played a crucial role in ushering in a "new renaissance of development" in the state. The state government has taken steps to ensure that the expansion projects are implemented smoothly, and the Defence Minister praised the efforts of the Adhikari government in ensuring the state's development.
