India's Shipbuilding Ambitions: GRSE's Leap into Offshore Support Vessels\n\nGarden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, has marked a significant milestone in its commercial shipbuilding portfolio by signing a contract with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) for the construction of four Hybrid Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs).\n\nThe contract, which was signed on 30 July 2026, follows the Notification of Award received by GRSE and represents a further step in diversifying the shipyard's order portfolio. The project is a testament to GRSE's capabilities in the specialised offshore support vessel segment, extending its expertise in the commercial maritime and offshore energy sectors.\n\nThe vessels, designed and built in accordance with the Rules of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), will support ONGC's offshore exploration and production operations, contributing to the maritime infrastructure required by India's energy sector. With an overall length of approximately 80 metres, a beam of 20 metres, and a deadweight capacity of 3,000 tonnes, each vessel will feature a clear deck area of around 650 square metres and an endurance of 45+3 days.\n\nA defining feature of the project is the incorporation of an advanced hybrid propulsion architecture, comprising electrically driven azimuth thrusters and a Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System. The battery system will support peak load management, spinning reserve, dynamic positioning operations, and emergency response functions. This configuration is intended to enhance operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of vessel operations.\n\nThe ONGC contract represents a significant step forward in GRSE's foray into offshore support vessels, enhancing India's maritime infrastructure with reduced environmental impact through advanced hybrid propulsion systems. The project is expected to contribute to the growth of India's shipbuilding industry, providing a boost to the country's energy sector and promoting sustainable maritime practices.\n\nAs GRSE continues to diversify its order portfolio and apply its shipbuilding expertise to the requirements of the commercial maritime and offshore energy sectors, the company is poised to play a key role in shaping India's shipbuilding ambitions. The successful execution of this project will not only enhance GRSE's reputation as a leading shipbuilder but also contribute to the growth of India's maritime economy.\n\nIn conclusion, the signing of the contract between GRSE and ONGC marks a significant milestone in India's shipbuilding ambitions, highlighting the country's commitment to sustainable maritime practices and its growing presence in the global shipbuilding industry.
