Explore CNC Systems →India's Satellite Surveillance Leap: Enhancing National Security\n\nIndia's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has made a significant leap in the country's satellite surveillance capabilities with the unveiling of Desi HawkEye 360. This advanced system consists of a constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) that can collect and analyze radio frequency (RF) signals from the ground.\n\nThe primary objective of Desi HawkEye 360 is to detect and track dark vessels and aircraft that evade tracking by switching off their Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders. These vessels, often involved in illicit activities such as smuggling sanctioned oil or fishing illegally, still emit radar, comms, and satcom signals that can be detected by the satellite constellation.\n\nIn addition to tracking dark vessels, Desi HawkEye 360 can also detect aircraft that do not squawk their ADS-B position or claim to be in a different location than their actual RF geolocation. This advanced technology will significantly enhance India's surveillance capabilities, particularly in conflict scenarios.\n\nThe system can detect enemy air activity, provide early warning, and support kill-chain operations against air defences. It can also monitor the order-of-battle of enemy air-defence radars, surveillance radars, comm nodes, and jammers. This information can be used to feed target databases for stand-off weapons like BrahMos and Cruise missiles to hit coordinates of high-value emitters.\n\nDesi HawkEye 360 can also be used for periodic RF mapping of an area to detect new deployments, tunneling/construction activity associated with comm infrastructure, and changes in transmitter patterns. This can be particularly useful along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and in tracking cross-border terrorist comms.\n\nThe system's ability to collect and analyze RF signals from LEO satellites offers several advantages, including a revisit time of near 15 minutes for surveillance areas. This is achieved through the use of multiple constellations in multiple orbits.\n\nThe recorded data from the satellites is relayed back to the Ground Control Station (GCS) when it is in the field of view of the spacecraft. All signal detection and parameter estimation are performed on the ground to perform geolocation of the potential emitters.\n\nDesi HawkEye 360 is a significant leap in India's satellite surveillance capabilities, and its potential applications are vast. The system has the potential to enhance national security, support early warning and kill-chain operations, and provide valuable intelligence to the Indian military.\n\nIn conclusion, Desi HawkEye 360 is a game-changer in the field of satellite surveillance, and its impact will be felt for years to come.
