The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has sounded the alarm on India's rapidly growing power demand, warning that the country may need to add substantially more coal-fired power capacity than planned to meet the surge in demand.
According to the CEA chairperson, Ghanshyam Prasad, the country's daily peak electricity demand has been running about 45-50 GW higher than a year earlier, partly due to weaker monsoon rains that reduced hydroelectric output and increased reliance on thermal plants. This has led to a surge in power shortages, with the country experiencing 560 million kWh of power shortages in September, the highest since August 2023.
Despite the push for coal generation, Prasad emphasized that this does not mean India is slowing down renewable energy development. In fact, the country added about 50 GW of renewable capacity last year and is expected to continue adding more than 50 GW annually. However, renewable growth must be complemented by other sources, such as nuclear power and pumped-storage hydropower, to maintain grid stability and ensure reliable electricity supplies as demand keeps rising.

Explore Carbon Fiber โThe CEA's warning is a wake-up call for India's policymakers to reassess their energy mix and ensure that the country has a balanced and sustainable energy policy. The government's plan to add 97 GW of coal power capacity to reach 307 GW by 2035 may no longer be sufficient to meet the growing demand, and the country may need to consider adding more coal-fired power capacity in the short term.
However, this does not mean that India should abandon its renewable energy goals. On the contrary, the country should continue to invest in renewable energy and explore new technologies to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. The key is to strike a balance between renewable growth and other sources of energy to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.
The CEA's warning is also a reminder that India's energy policy must be based on data-driven decision-making and not just on political or ideological considerations. The country needs to have a robust energy planning framework that takes into account the latest trends and projections in energy demand and supply.
In conclusion, India's power demand surge is a wake-up call for the country's policymakers to reassess their energy mix and ensure that the country has a balanced and sustainable energy policy. The CEA's warning is a reminder that the country needs to strike a balance between renewable growth and other sources of energy to ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.
