In a significant milestone for India's shipbuilding industry, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has launched the indigenous Ocean Research Vessel 'Sagar Manthan' for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research. This cutting-edge vessel is a testament to India's commitment to Atmanirbharta, driving innovation and self-reliance in the defence and maritime sectors.

The ORV, built at GRSE's Rishi Bankim Shipyard in Kolkata, is a major boost to India's oceanic ambitions, reflecting the country's growing capabilities in shipbuilding and advanced marine engineering for ocean research and exploration. With a gross tonnage of 5,900 tons and a speed of 14 knots, the 89.50m long, 18.80m wide ORV will conduct critical ocean research, including underway surveys, geophysical seismic surveys, and water sampling operations.

The ORV's advanced research equipment, including its Underway Swath Multibeam and Geophysical Seismic survey capabilities, will enable scientists to conduct detailed studies of the ocean floor and collect valuable data on ocean currents, temperature, and salinity. The vessel will also be capable of conducting Conductivity, Temperature and Depth (CTD) profiling and water sampling operations, including biological sampling using vertical and horizontal methods through various nets.

In addition to its research capabilities, the ORV will also be used for training and education purposes, providing scientists and technicians with hands-on experience in operating advanced research equipment. The vessel will also be used for surface and deep-sea mooring and data buoy operations, seabed sampling using corers and grabs, and rock dredging with chain bag dredges.

The launch of the ORV is a significant achievement for GRSE, which has been building survey vessels for the Indian Navy for nearly four decades. The shipyard has delivered survey ships to the Navy in the 80s and has also built and delivered the Marine Acoustic Research Vessel INS Sagardhwani to the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) in 1994. The ship is still in service and recently underwent a refit at GRSE.

GRSE has also completed the delivery of four Survey Vessels (Large) to the Navy, including the Sanshodhak, which was delivered on 30 Mar 26. The shipyard is now building nine warships, including an advanced guided missile frigate under the Navy's Project 17A, four ASW-SWCs and four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. Apart from these, GRSE is building 32 more platforms, including 13 ships for export.
