Explore CNC Systems →India's Next-Gen Remotely Piloted Aircraft Takes Shape\n\nIn a significant development, India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has announced plans to integrate advanced turboprop engines into its high-altitude, long-endurance (HALE) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program.\n\nBharat Forge Ltd. and Pratt & Whitney Canada have collaborated on this ambitious project, which aims to leverage the expertise of both companies to create a cutting-edge engine for the HALE UAV.\n\nThe PT6 E-Series turboprop engine, supplied by Pratt & Whitney Canada, will not only power the HALE UAV but also the MQ-9B SkyGuardian, which has been ordered by the Indian Armed forces for 31 units.\n\nGeneral Atomics Aeronautical Systems will provide technical support for the Remotely Piloted Aircraft, ensuring its seamless integration into the Indian military's operations.\n\nThe HALE UAV is expected to have an All-Up-Weight (AUW) of nearly 6-8 tons, making it a significant addition to India's military capabilities.\n\nThe DRDO has issued an Expression of Interest to identify a Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) for the project, with Tata, Larsen & Toubro, and Adani Group emerging as likely contenders.\n\nThe partnership model, where the DRDO retains core design and IP while private partners handle prototype build and manufacturing scale-up, has been successful in the past.\n\nThe Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has reportedly been considering opening future HALE development to private companies, following a strong industry response to the ₹30,000 crore MALE drone programme.\n\nThis move is expected to boost India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.\n\nThe HALE UAV program is a testament to India's commitment to developing advanced military capabilities, and its successful execution will have significant implications for the country's national security.\n\nAs the project progresses, it will be interesting to see how the DRDO and its partners navigate the complex technical and logistical challenges involved in developing a cutting-edge Remotely Piloted Aircraft.\n\nOne thing is certain, however - the HALE UAV is set to revolutionize India's military operations, and its impact will be felt for years to come.
