India's Multilateral Defence Strategy: Tarang Shakti 2026 and Beyond\n\nIndia recently hosted Tarang Shakti 2026, a multinational air exercise that brought together air forces from seven Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs) and 32 observer nations. The exercise aimed to promote global military aviation cooperation and strengthen professional understanding and operational cooperation among participating nations.\n\nRaksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated the Indian Air Force and participating nations on the successful exercise, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance, technological innovation, and international partnerships in addressing modern warfare challenges. He noted that future military power will be defined by speed, precision, information, and integration, not just platform numbers.\n\nThe Raksha Mantri highlighted the growing influence of unmanned systems, drones, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and long-range precision weapons in shaping contemporary military operations. He emphasized the need for continuous vigilance in view of the rapidly changing geopolitical environment and the uncertainties associated with technological advancements in the defence sector.\n\nIndia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has recognized the importance of strengthening national resilience against emerging security challenges and has adopted Atmanirbharta in defence as a national policy. The Raksha Mantri stressed that a nation must possess the capability to produce its own weapons and critical technologies to sustain itself during prolonged conflicts and periods of uncertainty.\n\nThe Indian Air Force has evolved from a force operating with limited resources at the time of Independence into a modern aerospace power equipped with advanced aircraft, precision weapons, sophisticated sensors, integrated networks, and increasingly advanced indigenous technologies. The Raksha Mantri emphasized that Atmanirbhar Bharat does not mean isolation from the world, but the development of domestic capabilities to design, develop, manufacture, maintain, and upgrade critical defence technologies.\n\nIndia is keen to explore cooperation with like-minded countries in research, co-development, co-production, maintenance, training, and innovation. The Raksha Mantri stated that the defence relationships of the future will be about technology and trust, not just about platforms.\n\nBuilding strong indigenous capabilities must go hand in hand with meaningful cooperation with trusted partners. India must be capable of acting independently when required while also operating effectively with other nations when their interests and responsibilities converge.\n\nIn this context, the Raksha Mantri highlighted the significance of Exercise Tarang Shakti in translating the principles of capability, technology, interoperability, and trust into operational experience. The exercise provided participating air forces an opportunity to operate alongside one another, exchange operational knowledge, assess procedures, and understand different platforms, doctrines, and approaches to mission planning.\n\nMultinational exercises enable aircrews and commanders to learn from one another, examine existing assumptions, and identify opportunities to improve their systems and processes. The Raksha Mantri described the spirit of the exercise as 'Different nations. Different aircraft. Different experiences. But one sky. That is the message of Tarang Shakti.'\n\nThe value of the exercise extends beyond the sorties flown and scenarios practised, encompassing the ability to communicate, coordinate, and operate effectively with partner forces. The Raksha Mantri called upon the Indian Air Force to continue building strong relationships with partner nations and to leverage these relationships to enhance its capabilities and operational effectiveness.\n\nIn conclusion, India's multilateral defence strategy, as exemplified by Exercise Tarang Shakti 2026, is a significant step towards strengthening national resilience and promoting global military aviation cooperation. By emphasizing self-reliance, technological innovation, and international partnerships, India is positioning itself as a key player in the evolving landscape of modern warfare.
