India's missile development has been a subject of great interest and pride in recent years. With the successful development of BrahMos, Astra, Akash, Rudram, MRSAM, Pralay, and Pinaka, the country has demonstrated its capabilities in designing and manufacturing advanced missiles. However, beneath the surface, a critical challenge looms: can India manufacture enough sophisticated seekers to match its missile-body production?

The seeker is a critical component of a missile, responsible for guiding it to its target with precision. Without an advanced seeker, even the most sophisticated missile is severely limited in its ability to perform terminal engagements. India uses or is developing several seeker technologies, including active radar, imaging infrared, passive RF, anti-radiation, and electro-optical systems. Each of these requires a distinct industrial ecosystem, with specialized components and manufacturing processes.

The production of sophisticated seekers is a complex task, requiring advanced electronics, precision calibration, and complex testing equipment. Manufacturers must test the radar performance with different target characteristics, speed, and interference. Anti-radiation seekers pose an additional challenge, as they need to detect relevant electromagnetic emissions amidst multiple emissions, jamming, and changing conditions.

India's reliance on foreign supply chains for specialized components poses a significant challenge. While the country is developing its semiconductor and defence-electronics prowess, certain specialized components may still require foreign supply chains. This is an important distinction between an Indian-based seeker assembly and an Indian-based critical supply chain for a seeker.

To overcome these challenges, India needs to develop a robust supply chain for seekers, with multiple sources and a strong network of Tier-2 and 3 suppliers. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) can continue to focus on research and development in state-of-the-art seekers, while Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and private defence electronics vendors can gradually increase their involvement in system production, integration, and sub-assemblies.

The increase in Tier-2 and 3 supplier network will reduce reliance on few suppliers and enable India to build a robust and sustainable missile industrial base. The missile industrial base should evolve from prototype qualification-to serial production, to mass production and to wartime replenishment. This will enable India to build a large inventory of missiles and replenish them quickly in case of a protracted conflict.

In conclusion, India's missile edge hinges on its ability to manufacture enough sophisticated seekers to match its missile-body production. The country needs to develop a robust supply chain for seekers, with multiple sources and a strong network of Tier-2 and 3 suppliers. By doing so, India can maintain its missile edge and ensure its national security.
