India's Layered Air Defence Shield: Upgraded Pechora Systems Extend Operational Lifespan

As a result, these upgraded batteries are expected to remain in active service until at least the mid-2030s, providing valuable operational capacity while newer indigenous systems are inducted in larger numbers.
The retention of the Pechora is also a testament to India's commitment to developing its domestic modernisation capability. Companies such as Alpha Design Technologies, working alongside the IAF and other defence organisations, have demonstrated the ability to digitally upgrade legacy Soviet-origin equipment using indigenous electronics, software, and sensor technologies. This expertise not only extends the operational life of existing assets but also reduces long-term dependence on foreign original equipment manufacturers for sustainment and upgrades.
The Pechora's operational relevance has been significantly enhanced, ensuring continuous protection for the nation's skies. With its comprehensive digital transformation, the system is well-equipped to counter a wide range of aerial threats, from mass-produced drones and precision-guided munitions to low-cost loitering munitions and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
