India Bolsters Anti-Tank Capabilities with Javelin Deal

In a significant move to bolster its anti-tank capabilities, India has finalized a deal with the United States to acquire the Javelin anti-tank system, a cutting-edge, medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missile. The acquisition is seen as a crucial step in enhancing India's ability to counter potential threats from neighboring countries, particularly Pakistan and China, which possess substantial tank capabilities.

According to defence experts, the Javelin system is essential in today's modern warfare, where tank battles are increasingly common. The Russia-Ukraine conflict, for instance, has highlighted the importance of anti-tank capabilities in modern warfare. Wing Commander Praful Bakshi (retd) noted that India's vast border with neighboring countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China, makes it essential for the country to have a robust anti-tank capability.

"Pakistan, Bangladesh, China - all these countries have tanks, and tank battles have become very common," Bakshi said. "We have seen it in Ukraine, in Iraq, in the 1971 war, in 1965, Khemkaran, etc...all these are remembered. In these tank battles, when an enemy tank comes, you destroy it either with a tank, a tank gun, or with anti-tank weapons; an anti-tank guided missile is very effective...so we have signed this deal with America."

Major General P.K. Sehgal (Retd.), a defence expert, emphasized that India's decision to acquire the Javelin system is a response to the country's existing deficiency in anti-tank guided missiles. "India clearly understands that Pakistan and China can launch a coordinated attack. Both possess substantial tank capabilities. Currently, India faces a significant deficiency in anti-tank guided missiles. To address this deficiency, India had been trying for a considerable time to acquire the Javelin anti-tank weapon system from the United States, but there had been no forward movement."

The Javelin system, jointly developed by Lockheed Martin and RTX, is a man-portable anti-tank missile system designed for use against armoured targets. The system is widely used by the US Army and US Marine Corps, as well as numerous international customers.

The signing of a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) between India and the US has marked the beginning of a new chapter in the country's anti-tank capabilities. The acquisition of the Javelin system is seen as a significant step forward in the U.S.-India defence relationship, which is at record high levels.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed the deal in a post on X, saying, "In a BIG news! India plans to buy the battle-tested Javelin anti-tank system. Just as @secwar (Pete Hegseth) highlighted at the May 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue, this is a great step forward in the U.S.-India defence relationship and opens the door to co-production possibilities."
