IG Defence Unveils Jwala-MK1 Surface-to-Air Missile System to Indian Air Force Officials

IG Defence, an Indian drone startup, has recently showcased its Jwala-MK1 short-range surface-to-air missile system to Indian Air Force officials during Dronathon 2026. This move marks a significant step towards accelerating the development of an indigenous counter-UAV weapon.

The Jwala-MK1 is designed to provide rapid-response as a short-range air-defence capability, with an engagement envelope of 2–5 km and a stated engagement altitude of 50 metres to 5,000 metres. The system is intended to engage unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other aerial targets, which can be used as part of saturated attacks on key installations.

The proposed deployment configuration for the Jwala-MK1 is a truck-mounted multiple canister launcher arrangement, which can be moved around and integrated into any 4×4 transporters used by the Indian Army or Air force. This configuration offers easier transportability and deployability for the system.

The Jwala-MK1 features a dual-pulse solid rocket motor, which provides controlled thrust profiles during various phases of the flight. The missile is intended to carry a 0.5–1.5 kg pre-fragmented high-explosive warhead fitted with a proximity fuze. IG Defence claims a circular error probable (CEP) of less than 2 metres at maximum range.

The company also specifies a target-detection-to-launch reaction time of less than seven seconds. The Jwala-MK1 system is intended to be configured predominantly for field deployment, transportation, and repeated operations in challenging terrain. IG Defence claims the system incorporates secure communications, telemetry, and operator procedures based on encrypted links.

The proposed architecture would involve integration between the target-detection sensors, command-and-control equipment, and missile launcher. However, the company has not indicated the radar or electro-optical sensor suite it intends to use for target detection and tracking.

The Jwala-MK1 is a significant development in India's indigenous counter-UAV defence capabilities. With its short-range air-defence capability and rapid-response features, the system has the potential to provide effective protection against UAV threats. As the Indian military continues to modernize its capabilities, the Jwala-MK1 is likely to play a crucial role in enhancing the country's air-defence capabilities.
