India's Helicopter Fleet Expansion: HAL's Strategic Move to Boost Shakti Engine Production\

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has made a significant move to boost the production capacity of the Shakti helicopter engine, a critical component of India's indigenous combat and utility helicopter fleet. The ₹218 crore expansion at the Koraput facility will increase the annual production capacity from around 80 to 180 engines, supporting the growing demand for helicopters in the country.\

The expansion comes at a time when India's indigenously produced helicopter fleet is entering a major production phase, particularly with the government's order for 156 LCH Prachand helicopters for the Indian Air Force and Indian Army. The Ministry of Defence has identified both the ALH Dhruv and LCH Prachand as platforms driving the requirement for additional Shakti engine capacity.\

\

The March-2025 contract covers 156 Prachand helicopters, of which 66 are for the IAF and 90 for the Army. Deliveries are set to start from the third year and should stretch over five years. HAL currently produces roughly 80 Ardiden 1H1-based Shakti engines per annum at its Bengaluru facility.\

\

With the additional production line, the overall annual capacity will reach around 180 engines, according to officials cited by Hindustan Times. The Shakti has its origins in the Safran Ardiden 1H1 turboshaft, developed with the long-running HAL-Safran collaboration.\

\

The new line at Koraput represents a ₹218 crore investment and is being set up in addition to the overall aero-engine manufacturing activities being pursued at the facility. Though the 156-helicopter Prachand order does create a significant new spike in demand, the ALH Dhruv continues to be an important user of the Shakti engine.\

\

HAL has also been pursuing additional ALH requirements. Its earlier disclosures pointed to a potential requirement for 143 ALHs for the IAF and Army, although those were at various stages of approval rather than part of the 156-helicopter Prachand contract.\

\

For Prachand in particular, ensuring sufficient engine availability will be critical to avoid delays, as helicopter production can be constrained even when airframe manufacturing capacity is available. While the new line represents more than a simple increase in manufacturing output, it will provide the propulsion capacity ahead of a large-scale expansion of India's indigenous combat and utility helicopter fleet.\

\

The expansion will not only meet the current demand but also cater to the future requirements of the Indian Air Force and Army. It will also provide a boost to the country's indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.\

\

In conclusion, HAL's strategic move to boost Shakti engine production capacity is a significant step towards strengthening India's indigenous defense capabilities. It will enable the country to meet its growing demand for helicopters and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, making it a crucial component of India's defense modernization efforts.
