Explore CNC Systems →India's Ground-Launched Rudram-2: A Game-Changer for SEAD Capabilities\n\nThe Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has proposed a ground-launched variant of its air-launched Rudram-2 missile system, designed to neutralize enemy air defences. This move marks a significant shift in India's air defence capabilities, with the potential to enhance the Army's Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) capabilities.\n\nThe proposed ground-launched Rudram-2 system would be built on the existing air-launched variant, which has been successfully tested from the Su-30MKI fighter jet. The ground-launched variant would offer a range of up to 200-250 km, making it an effective tool for taking out enemy long-range Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) batteries.\n\nA key advantage of the ground-launched Rudram-2 system is its mobility, allowing it to be easily transported and deployed in forward airbases. This would enable the Army to contest airspace at forward airbases, making it difficult for the Indian Air Force (IAF) to operate from them for SEAD missions.\n\nWhile the Army would require midcourse data linking from jets or SIGNIT aircraft or drones or ground Electronic Support Measures (ESM) to delink the kill-chain dependency, the ground-based Rudram-2 system would offer a one-way engagement, forcing the enemy to keep their radars in 'Blink mode'. This would degrade the enemy's air picture over the border during hours that matter, achieving operational effect with attrition of only a few missiles.\n\nThe proposed ground-launched Rudram-2 system would complement the existing Harop-class loitering munitions, which are designed for patient hunting. The mobile ground ARM would give the Army an autonomous way to blind the enemy before the main missile barrage.\n\nWhile the proposal is still at an early stage, it is unclear whether the Army will be interested in the ground-launched variant of the missile and how long it will take for the DRDO to develop it. However, the potential benefits of the ground-launched Rudram-2 system make it an exciting development in India's air defence capabilities.\n\nIn conclusion, the proposed ground-launched Rudram-2 system has the potential to revolutionize India's SEAD capabilities, offering a range of up to 200-250 km and contested airspace at forward airbases. With its mobility and one-way engagement, the ground-launched Rudram-2 system would be a valuable asset for the Indian Army, enhancing its ability to neutralize enemy air defences and protect its interests in the region.
