Designed in an era of collaborative and imported technologies, the Arjun has proven to be too heavy for most bridges on the western front, too thirsty on fuel for sustained operations, and reliant on imported sub-systems.\n\nIt is time for India's armour planners to put the Arjun to rest and turn to the future. The future has the name Future Ready Combat Vehicle, more commonly known as the FMBT - Future Main Battle Tank.\n\nUnlike the Arjun, the FMBT is being designed with full modularity, lightness, and a network-centric approach to operations. This will allow its employment from plains to the passes of Ladakh, addressing the Arjun's limitations and ensuring bridging and rail transportation are not limiting factors.\n\nThe Indian Army's force planning and structure has long identified a need for a 45-50 tonne tank to ensure that bridging and rail transportation is not a limiting factor in the mobility of armoured spearheads across the country's varied terrain. A lighter chassis also opens up a host of possibilities - true modularity, mission-specific upgrades, and active protection systems that are integrated at design, not retrofitted.\n\nDRDO's Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment has the technical know-how to lead the charge, but only if they do not have to juggle that responsibility with firefighting obsolescence issues on a legacy platform. An administrative and budgetary clean break - formally closing the valve on further variants of Arjun beyond what has been committed to - would allow CVRDE, private sector partners, and the Army's Directorate General of Mechanised Forces to focus their efforts on the next generation of requirements.\n\nThis does not mean abandoning the industrial ecosystem Arjun has built. The forging, metallurgical, and precision-machining capabilities built by public and private vendors for the production of Arjun are directly applicable to FMBT, and that continuity should be seen as a virtue - not a reason for dragging out design and production timelines for whichever variant of Arjun comes next.\n\nCritics will rightly point out that abandoning Arjun outright will waste decades of sunk investment. But sunk cost is the wrong metric to apply when it comes to a fighting vehicle that will need to survive on the battlefield of loitering munitions, top-attack anti-tank missiles, and networked reconnaissance drones.\n\nArjun was envisioned for a war that looks increasingly like the past. FMBT is India's opportunity to design a platform for the war of the future - and that opportunity should not be wasted on another decade of split focus between two platforms.\n\nIn conclusion, the Future Main Battle Tank represents a significant leap forward in military modernization for India. By embracing modularity, lightness, and a network-centric approach, India can ensure that its armoured spearheads are equipped to tackle the challenges of the 21st century.
