India's Future Combat Architecture: Integrating Multi-Generational Aircraft\n\nThe Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to undergo a significant transformation in the coming years, with the introduction of new aircraft generations, including the Rafale, Tejas, AMCA, and 6th gen fighters. However, instead of replacing older platforms with newer ones, the IAF plans to integrate these different generations of aircraft to create a more collaborative and effective combat force.\n\nAccording to Deputy Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Tejpal Singh, the IAF will need to operate a multi-generation combat fleet for years to come. This means making their ability to share information across different aircraft and systems more important than forcing them to conform to one technological standard.\n\nSpeaking at the NDTV Defence Summit 2026, Singh noted that future air warfare would require differing generations of platforms to be interoperable and contribute to a common battlespace picture. He cited a future IAF consisting of upgraded MiG-29s and Mirage aircraft, Rafale, LCA, and eventually the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, plus airborne early-warning systems and ground-based air-defence systems.\n\nThese platforms do not have to become identical systems, Singh emphasized. They just need to be able to exchange information where operationally required. Getting there will require gateways, common standards, and open interfaces allowing systems across different generations to interoperate.\n\nThis approach is vital to an air force that can’t update its whole combat fleet at once. New aircraft added to the fleet must be able to operate within an architecture incorporating older platforms.\n\nThe concept also changes the way combat capability is measured. The value of an individual fighter increasingly depends not only on its own radar, weapons, or electronic systems, but what it can know from the wider force.\n\nThe eventual introduction of AMCA will therefore not create a clean break between old and new aircraft. It will enter an IAF in which multiple fighter generations and support systems co-exist.\n\nSingh’s argument suggests that India’s future combat architecture needs to be designed around this reality, rather than assuming a technological uniformity.\n\nThe aim is to ensure that an aircraft can contribute useful information to the wider battlespace and receive information it can’t receive from sensors and systems it carries itself.\n\nIn essence, the IAF is moving towards a more collaborative and adaptive combat architecture, where different aircraft generations work together seamlessly to achieve a common goal. This approach will enable the IAF to stay ahead of the curve in terms of technological advancements and operational effectiveness.\n\nAs the IAF continues to evolve and adapt to the changing security landscape, it is clear that integrating multi-generational aircraft will be a key factor in its success. By embracing this approach, the IAF can create a more effective and efficient combat force that is better equipped to tackle the complex challenges of modern warfare.
