DRDO Seeks Industry Partners for Cutting-Edge UV Lens Optics

In a significant move to bolster India's defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has issued a call to the Indian industry to collaborate on the development of advanced ultraviolet (UV) lens optics. This innovative technology has far-reaching implications for the development of missile approach warning systems and other electro-optical defence solutions.

At the heart of UV optics lies the ability to detect and track targets by leveraging the unique properties of the ultraviolet spectrum. Unlike traditional sensors that rely on visible or infrared signatures, UV optics can tap into the ultraviolet regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, allowing for enhanced target detection and identification.

One of the most promising aspects of UV optics is the solar-blind ultraviolet band. This part of the spectrum is particularly useful for detecting artificial emissions, such as those produced by rocket propulsion, amidst a low natural background noise. This capability is crucial for the development of effective missile approach warning systems (MAWS), which can alert aircraft or platforms to incoming threats before they reach the target.

MAWS systems can employ a range of technologies, including infrared, ultraviolet, radar, or combinations of these. Solar-blind UV sensors, in particular, offer a unique advantage in terms of target discrimination. By detecting the characteristic UV emissions associated with rocket propulsion, these sensors can provide accurate and timely warnings, reducing the risk of missile strikes.

The DRDO's initiative to seek industry partners for UV lens optics development aims to establish a domestic manufacturing capability for specialist defence-grade optical components. While India has made significant strides in electro-optics, infrared sensors, and missile warning systems, the development of UV optics represents a more niche technology area.

By fostering a domestic supply chain for UV optical components, India can reduce its reliance on imported assemblies and gain greater control over production and long-term maintenance. This strategic move can also help to accelerate the development of advanced defence systems, enabling the country to stay ahead of emerging threats.
