India's Defence Modernisation Drive: A Record Budget Hike on the Horizon\n\nIndia's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is set to request a record 35% increase in the armed forces' modernisation budget for FY2027-28. This proposed hike would bring India's annual capital spending close to $30 billion, a significant boost to the country's defence capabilities.\n\nAccording to Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, the ministry has fully exhausted its revised allocations for modernisation in both FY2024-25 and FY2025-26. The sharp rise in defence contract signings, with annual doubling of signings, has funded all services and boosted defence manufacturers' visibility.\n\nIndia's defence budget has shown a steady increase over the past three financial years, with capital acquisition getting a bigger allocation in FY2026-27. The projected total defence allocation, including capital expenditure, was at ₹7.85 lakh crore in FY2026-27. Of this ₹2.19 lakh crore came under capital expenditure, while ₹1.85 lakh crore was allocated to capital acquisition, up around 24% over FY2025-26.\n\nThe proposed increase would fund procurements across the Army, Navy, and Indian Air Force in aircraft, warships, submarines, armoured vehicles, missiles, drones, and other military systems. Defence manufacturers will gain greater visibility on future orders, although the impact would largely depend on the approvals and execution speeds for procurement proposals.\n\nThe proposed 35% increase is not yet a sanctioned budget allocation, and the Defence Ministry needs to get the approval through the government's budget process. The final amount could turn out to be lower, but even a 25% fallback will be significant in terms of increased allocations for modernisation.\n\nThe proposed budget hike is a significant step towards rejuvenating the equipment base and enhancing the operational capabilities of the armed forces. It will enable the country to strengthen its defence posture and respond effectively to emerging security challenges.\n\nIn conclusion, India's defence modernisation drive is set to receive a significant boost with the proposed record budget hike. The increased allocations will enable the country to strengthen its defence capabilities and respond effectively to emerging security challenges.
