India's Commitment to Bhutan's Progress and Prosperity: A Strategic Partnership

India's relationship with Bhutan is built on a foundation of mutual respect, trust, and cooperation. The two countries have a unique bond, with India being Bhutan's largest trading partner and a significant source of foreign investment. In recent years, India has been actively engaged in strengthening its ties with Bhutan through various development initiatives.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's recent visit to Bhutan marked a significant milestone in this endeavor. During his two-day visit, Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral ties. The talks focused on advancing multifaceted engagement in development partnership, energy, trade, connectivity, culture, and people-to-people ties.

One of the key highlights of Jaishankar's visit was the handing over of 54 Made in India electric vehicles to Bhutanese PM Tobgay. This move is part of India's efforts to support Bhutan's transition to sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. The electric vehicles are expected to reduce Bhutan's carbon footprint and promote environmentally friendly transportation.

Jaishankar also launched the second phase of the international UPI (Unified Payments Interface) for Bhutanese citizens. This initiative aims to facilitate digital payments between India and Bhutan, making it easier for Bhutanese citizens to make payments while visiting India. The use of UPI in Bhutan is expected to boost trade and commerce between the two countries.

In addition to these initiatives, Jaishankar oversaw the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on extending the Nehru Wangchuck Scholarship Scheme for higher education. The scheme provides scholarships to Bhutanese students to pursue higher education in Indian institutions. The MoU aims to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries and promote cultural exchange.

Jaishankar's visit also saw the inauguration of a couple of projects, including a 65-bed Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital in Mongar. He also laid the foundation stone for the 500 KW Lunana Hydropower Project in Gasa, northern Bhutan. These projects are expected to improve healthcare and energy infrastructure in Bhutan, benefiting the local population.
