India's ATAGS Tork Proves Its Mettle in Armenia's Mountainous Terrain\n\nA recent video released by the Armenian Ministry of Defence has provided valuable insights into the performance of India's indigenous 155-mm artillery system, the ATAGS Tork. The video shows the ATAGS Tork howitzer firing live rounds in Armenia's challenging terrain, demonstrating its high-altitude capabilities and ability to withstand rocky terrain and firing forces.\n\nThe appearance of the Indian artillery system on Armenian territory is significant, not only in terms of India's indigenous 155-mm artillery development but also in terms of the terrain it has been seen on. The video provides a close view of the 155 mm system on the challenging Armenian terrain, showcasing its ability to be positioned and presented for firing in the rocky terrain.\n\nThe footage also captures the gun being mounted on the multiple-wheel carriage with the barrel raised for firing while the hydraulics and stabilising mechanisms can also be seen on the gun platform. This is a useful demonstration because the ATAGS is a fairly large towed gun system, and firing it from such conditions requires more than just getting it on the desired azimuth and elevation; the carriage also has to be able to withstand the firing forces and positioned on relatively stable ground.\n\nThe Armenian video thus presents the Indian howitzer in a realistic mountainous firing environment, which is more difficult to recreate on a firing range. For the ATAGS development programme, the use of the howitzer in Armenia also serves as a valuable foreign evaluation of the indigenous artillery system.\n\nWhile there is no substitute for objective testing and measurements, images and videos from the Armenian use of the guns can serve as useful evidence for India's domestic artillery development. After all, the ATAGS was developed in India with the involvement of the Defence Research and Development Organisation and India's defence industry, making the Armenian evaluations critical for India's potential future arms exports.\n\nThe use of the ATAGS Tork howitzer in Armenia has also highlighted the importance of indigenous artillery development for India's defence capabilities. The country's ability to develop and manufacture its own artillery systems has significant implications for its national security and defence preparedness.\n\nIn conclusion, the Armenian Ministry of Defence video has provided valuable insights into the performance of India's ATAGS Tork howitzer, demonstrating its high-altitude capabilities and ability to withstand rocky terrain and firing forces. The video has also highlighted the importance of indigenous artillery development for India's defence capabilities and the critical role that foreign evaluations can play in this process.
