The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has confirmed that the Astra Mk-1 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful completion of trials for its locally made radio-frequency (RF) seeker. This indigenous technology milestone marks a major step towards India's goal of achieving self-sufficiency in air-to-air capabilities.

The RF seeker, manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), has been a critical component in the development of the Astra Mk-1. This advanced seeker enables the missile to detect, track, and engage its target during the terminal phase of an engagement. The RF seeker works by using radar-frequency energy to locate and track the target, making it an essential component in the missile's ability to engage hostile aircraft beyond visual range.

The Astra Mk-1 is an all-weather BVRAAM developed for the Indian Air Force (IAF). It is designed to provide fighter aircraft with the ability to engage hostile aircraft beyond visual range, allowing pilots to attack targets without relying solely on close-range dogfighting. The missile has been integrated with Indian fighter platforms, including the Su-30MKI, and is intended to become an important part of the IAF's indigenous air-combat weapons ecosystem.

The development of the Astra Mk-1's RF seeker is a significant achievement for India's defence research and development capabilities. This move is expected to increase the range of the missile from its current 110 km to 160 km in the next phase.
