The reported interest in China's Shenyang J-16 heavy fighter by Pakistan's Air Force has sent shockwaves through India's defense establishment. This twin-engine, twin-seat multirole fighter combines long-range capabilities, substantial weapons carriage, and modern sensors with a sophisticated electronic-warfare architecture. The J-16D variant, in particular, offers reconnaissance, offensive, and defensive electronic-warfare capabilities that would give Pakistan's Air Force a significant edge over traditional Indian fighters.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has long been aware of the potential threat posed by the J-16. The aircraft's advanced sensors and electronic-warfare capabilities make it a formidable opponent in the skies. However, the IAF has been slow to respond to this emerging threat. The Su-30MKI, India's largest combat fleet, is due for a major upgrade, but the process has been delayed due to various reasons.

The J-16's electronic-warfare capabilities are a major concern for the IAF. The Rafale, India's other heavy fighter, would also become increasingly important in countering the J-16 threat. Its combination of advanced sensors, electronic warfare, and long-range air-to-air weapons gives the IAF another platform capable of operating in a heavily contested electromagnetic environment. However, the IAF would need to ensure that the Rafale's electronic-warfare capabilities are strengthened to counter the J-16's advanced sensors and electronic-warfare capabilities.

The bigger challenge for the IAF would be network warfare. A Pakistani J-16 force could potentially be integrated with other Chinese-origin systems, creating a layered kill chain that threatens India's air superiority. This makes airborne early-warning and control aircraft, ground-based sensors, and secure datalinks just as important as fighter performance.

The IAF would need to maintain a resilient sensor network capable of operating even when individual radar systems are being jammed. However, the IAF would need to ensure that its fighters can survive and fight inside a dense electromagnetic environment. This would require a significant investment in electronic-warfare capabilities, airborne early-warning and control aircraft, and ground-based sensors.

The J-16's arrival would also strengthen the argument for rapidly introducing the Tejas Mk2 and AMCA with mature electronic-warfare and sensor-fusion capabilities. The future Indian fighter fleet cannot be designed merely around airframe performance. Its ability to survive and fight inside a dense electromagnetic environment will be fundamental.

In conclusion, the reported interest in China's Shenyang J-16 heavy fighter by Pakistan's Air Force has significant implications for India's air superiority. The IAF would need to accelerate the Su-30MKI's modernisation, strengthen Rafale and Tejas electronic-warfare capabilities, expand airborne early-warning coverage, improve anti-jamming communications and navigation, develop realistic J-16 threat-replication training, and ensure that future Tejas Mk2 and AMCA aircraft enter service with mature sensor-fusion and electronic-warfare systems. The stakes are high, but preparation is key to ensuring India's air superiority.
