In December 2024, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with HAL for 12 additional aircraft, with the new fighters incorporating 62.6 percent indigenous content. These aircraft will be manufactured at HAL's Nashik facility, further solidifying India's commitment to domestic aerospace capabilities.
The Su-30MKI's greatest advantage lies in its size and payload capacity. Compared to the lightweight Tejas Mk1A, the Sukhoi can carry substantially more weapons and fuel, providing the IAF with long-range persistence. This makes it particularly valuable for missions involving heavy air-to-air missile loads, long-range strike weapons, and maritime operations.
India has already demonstrated this approach through the integration of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile with the Su-30MKI. HAL's Nashik division has played a key role in integrating indigenous armament onto the aircraft, including BrahMos, while continuing comprehensive overhaul and repair support for the fleet.
The next major transformation could come through the proposed Su-30MKI upgrade programme. HAL has described the planned modernisation as an ambitious effort involving major changes to the aircraft's avionics architecture, including the radar, mission computer, and cockpit displays. The design and development phase is expected to move forward following government approvals, with the first batch of 84 aircraft ultimately expected to undergo the upgrade.
Such an upgrade could fundamentally extend the combat relevance of the Su-30MKI. Rather than replacing the aircraft simply because its original Soviet-era architecture is ageing, India can use the enormous airframe as a platform for newer Indian sensors, electronic warfare systems, data links, and weapons. The result could be a significantly more capable fighter without requiring the IAF to wait for hundreds of next-generation aircraft to enter service.
This is particularly important because India's future fighter fleet will probably be built around different aircraft serving different roles. The Tejas Mk1A provides a relatively compact multirole fighter, while the Tejas Mk2 is intended to occupy the medium-weight category. The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) will eventually provide India with a stealth-oriented fifth-generation combat capability. Rafale will continue to provide a highly capable multirole platform. The Su-30MKI, meanwhile, can occupy the heavy-fighter segment and provide the range, payload, and weapons capacity that smaller aircraft cannot easily replicate.
The aircraft's continued relevance is also important because India's fighter squadron strength remains under pressure. Until sufficient numbers of Tejas Mk1A, Tejas Mk2, and eventually AMCA become available, retiring large numbers of Su-30MKIs would create an unnecessary capability gap. Maintaining and upgrading the existing fleet therefore provides the IAF with a bridge between its current combat force and its future-generation fighter architecture.
