The potential procurement also needs to be viewed alongside the Indian Army's reported requirement for additional QRSAM missiles. While the two systems perform different operational roles, the simultaneous expansion of both capabilities would indicate a broader effort to increase the density of India's indigenous ground-based air-defence network.
QRSAM is designed around highly mobile battlefield air defence, while Akash-NG is intended to provide a different layer of protection for airbases, strategic installations, and other important assets. Together with longer-range systems, very-short-range air-defence weapons, and counter-drone systems, they could form a more comprehensive defensive architecture.
The requirement for around 1,000 Akash-NG missiles could also become particularly relevant to the IAF's airbase defence strategy. India's fighter fleet is distributed across numerous airbases, many of which would be important targets during a major conflict. Protecting aircraft on the ground, command centres, fuel storage, ammunition facilities, and radar installations requires layered air defence capable of engaging threats before they reach their targets.
The Akash-NG's modern sensor and guidance architecture is intended to improve its ability to operate against manoeuvring aerial targets and threats approaching from different directions. Its effectiveness, however, would ultimately depend on how well individual batteries are integrated into the wider IAF air-defence command-and-control network.
